BREAKDOWN

SADAKICHI

Age: 20s
Ethnicity: Japanese (m)

Kind, cool, ambitious, logical, unpretentious, optimistic, inspired, inquisitive. A working-class farmer and an ex-Marine. Sadakichi is a man of action and conviction who refuses to lose his sense of idealism and love for adventure. He walks the walk and talks the talk and is determined to help build a better Japan post WWII. Sadakichi loves life. He loves the world. He is also smitten with Keiko – though he should never come off as desperate. He carries no bag. Everything fits into his pockets, including a small notebook and pencil.

BELOW ROLES ARE CAST

KEIKO

Age: 20s
Ethnicity: Japanese (f)

Stubborn, strong willed, snobby, beautiful, prideful with a pitch-black sense of humor that definitely roots from severe depression. In another world, she would have been a cosmopolitan, funny mean girl with big ambitions – but instead she is acerbically resigned to living life with the limitations of being a woman whose family has lost all their assets in a post-WWII Japan. A survivor of the 1945 atomic bomb attack in Nagasaki city.

STUDENT 1

Ethnicity: Hafu (Japanese national and white American mixed race, f)

We follow bits of her life from ages 20-30 in NYC from 2006-2016. She is a good friend with a high threshold for uncomfortable behavior. She has a tendency to dismiss her feelings. She is passionate and serious about what she does but has a hard time taking care of herself. There is a darkness living inside of her that she often offsets with humor.

STUDENT 2

Ethnicity: Korean American (f)
Note: Doubles multiple characters

Common ground for everyone she portrays is a big heart – and a level head.

STUDENT 3

Ethnicity: Any race (m)
Note: Doubles multiple characters

Common ground for everyone they portray is a sly nature with an undercurrent of anger when appropriate.
