Breakdown

Othello:
Male, African American or Middle Eastern, Early 40s. He is the most successful military commander in the Mediterranean, an outsider who learned to live by his wits from an early age, whose skill, strength and command allowed him to rise to a position of enormous esteem and quiet dignity. Deeply in love with Desdemona. An actor with terrific language skills, but also great warmth and emotional nuance.

Desdemona:
Female, Caucasian, early – late 20s. Beautiful, sincere, has an innocence and vulnerability.

Bianca:
Female, Caucasian, early-late 20s. Earthy, slutty. A prostitute who is dating Cassio. Has a vulnerability and toughness.

Cassio:
Male, late 20- late 30s. Caucasian, the soldier Othello selects to make his right hand man. Strong, attractive – with excellent organizational skills (Iago mocks him repeatedly as an accountant). He is also a light weight when it comes to alcohol, and a hothead (it is Iago’s knowledge of this trait that leads to his downfall).
