SYNOPSIS

72 Miles to Go... traces one family's journey across time, borders, and their ongoing search for freedom. Clinging to the promise of their destinies and empowered by a love that knows no borders, Billy and Anita brave every challenge with hearts wide open to create a future of safety and hope for their children. The story takes place in Tucson, Arizona and Nogales, Mexico, and this production from director Jacob G. Padrón celebrates the courage, power, dignity, and beauty of all the immigrant communities, including in New Haven and beyond.

NOTE ON CASTING

We at Bass/Valle Casting and Long Wharf Theatre acknowledge that the Latine community is not a monolith and its identity exists along a spectrum of racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. This notion informs our casting process and artistic choices. In an effort to support the dramaturgical needs of 72 Miles to Go..., we encourage performers who identify as Chicane, Mexican or Mexican American to put their names forward. However, we remain open to seeing actors who identify as being part of the larger Latin American diaspora.

The artistic team is also looking forward to seeing work from disabled performers and actors with different body shapes and sizes.

CHARACTER

BREAKDOWN

BILLY: Male-Identifying, Chicano (Latino), late 40s - mid 50s. Pastor at a Unitarian church. While holding his grief quietly for his children and marriage, Bill is the ultimate caretaker and protector - warm, sturdy, and able to flip on a dime. He sometimes has a hard time finding his words. NOTE: Actors should be comfortable speaking some Spanish on stage.

ANITA: Female-Identifying, Mexican (Latina), early 40s - early 50s. Living in Nogales, Mexico. Unlike Billy, Anita has all the words and expresses herself freely to show her love and care for her children. There is a resolve to Anita that is undeniable. NOTE: Actors should be comfortable speaking Spanish on stage.

CHRISTIAN: Male-Identifying, Chicano (Latino), early 20s - early 30s. Dreams of being a Marine. He wishes life were different and there's an angst that sometimes clouds his ability to see what could be. He presents as uncaring and unbothered but it's his protection. He wants to be seen, and he wants his life to mean something.

EVA: Female-Identifying, Chicana (Latina), 18+ to play from 17 to 25. The caretaker. Puts everyone else first. Eva is smart, attentive, and quick to judge. She's learning to find her own voice.

AARON: Male-Identifying, Chicano (Latino), 18+ to play from 14 to 22. Loves science. He's wise beyond his years. He's tender but there's also a quiet strength about him. He's curious about the world and wants to make it better, not for him, but for his family.
