Breakdown

COMPANY STATEMENT: Now in its 21st season, TACT/The Actors Company Theatre is an actor-driven, actor-run company that presents neglected or rarely seen plays by acclaimed playwrights. The emphasis of our productions is on the text and the actor’s craft. Although TACT casts initially from its company, it does regularly engage guest actors for specific roles throughout its season and is particularly interested in meeting classically trained, versatile, and imaginative actors who are skilled in character work and transformation.

Sue Barker
Age: late 30s. Attractive and successful lingerie buyer at a Chicago department store. Racked with guilt at having abandoned her 17-year-old son as an infant, Sue struggles between her burgeoning maternal feelings and the fear that his presence will disrupt the life she has built in his absence.

Donnie Barker
Age: 17. The tough and tender son of Sue Barker. Donnie is home for a holiday break from a juvenile delinquent work farm and hopeful that his mother will let him stay on permanently. Toughened by a life lived in orphanages and institutions he is hungry for connection and approval but socially awkward.

Bernie Slovenck
Age: 33. Attractive and brutish car salesman and Sue Barker’s live-in lover. Lazy and ambitious, Bernie enjoys the finer things in life but resents Sue for providing them.

Vince Brinkman
Age: 50’s. Successful executive and neighbor of Sue and Bernie. Volatile and broken, he seems always to be slightly drunk. Married to Claire.

Claire Brinkman
Age: Late 20’s. Vince’s unhappy and much younger wife. A former “model”, with a steady appetite for sexual conquests outside her marriage.

Gil
Age: Late teens. Donnie’s friend from the work farm. A survivor who is headed for trouble.

Religious Fanatic, Party Guests.
Age: 30’s – 40’s. Woman to play the religious fanatic wandering the halls, and Vince’s party guests, one of whom has a terrible violent encounter with Donnie at the end of the play.
