40s White American woman. She has 13 children. She’s forward, brash at times, hardened, but also caring and kind with a wicked sense of humor. She’s a nurse at a nursing home.
JOEL
Early 30s Haitian-American man. A landlord. A caretaker-by-default-and-by-nature of most of the building’s inhabitants. He’s a little awkward, but kind and charismatic, with a good sense of humor about himself. He’s very warm.
TOUSSAINT/MAN
Early 30s Haitian man. TOUSSAINT exists only in SULA’s dreams as an adult incarnation of her son. The part is doubled with MAN. MAN is Toussaint’s father. He is a powerful, sexually dynamic force. He is darkness incarnate, ferocious, terrifying; a god of death in a man’s clothing.
MADISON
Early/Mid 30s Haitian-American woman. Upper Middle Class, out of touch with her Haitian roots. In an unhappy marriage, but trying to hold on to the idea of what her life should be. She’s married to TREVOR and hires SULA as the nanny for her son.
VISHAL
Mid/Late 20s Multi-Ethnic Trinidadian man. He is a gigolo, gay, and fabulous in his own right. Smart as a whip, witty, caring and very protective of his friends.
TREVOR
Mid 30s White American man. A white-collar guy. He’s married to MADISON, but unhappily so. He is somewhat duplicitous, but mostly he’s hurt, and very humanly weak. His power shows in his professional life.
MANUEL/REVEREND
50s/60s Latino man. MANUEL is a 113 years old Cuban man living in a nursing home. A bitter old man, with a sharp tongue. He just wants to die already. The part is doubled with the REVEREND.
