SEEKING:

JEAN VALJEAN - 35-40s. Sings to B (high lyric baritone or tenor with both strong low notes and a strong falsetto). A poor man who rises to affluence, he has great natural nobility and dignity. A powerful figure, a physically and morally large man with a character of operatic size and passion. The voice needs to have a pop/rock sound or a classical sound of extraordinary textual clarity. This character can be Black, Indigenous, API, Latine, MENASA, Mixed or White.

JAVERT - 35-40s. Baritone, sings to G. Policeman who relentlessly hunts Valjean. An imposing character. The ultimate “law and order” figure. Obsessed, to the point of irrationality, with a rigid and merciless moral code. He too is a character of operatic size and passion. Both belt voice and classical can suit this role. Must have a natural gravitas and a darker vocal quality than Jean Valjean. This character can be Black, Indigenous, API, Latine, MENASA, Mixed or White.

THENARDIER - Late 30s-40s. Strong comic character role. A dishonest innkeeper, later a petty, amoral thief. Greedy, irreverent, selfish, boorish, vulgar. Baritone, sings to F sharp. Must have a strong handle on using text in song. This character can be Black, Indigenous, API, Latine, MENASA, Mixed or White.

MARIUS - Late teens to early 20s. High baritone (sings to A) with a strong bottom (to A). A member of the aristocracy who joins the revolutionary student movement. Romantic but in a sensitive, 19th century “byronic” way. This character can be Black, Indigenous, API, Latine, MENASA, Mixed or White.

ENJOLRAS - 20s-early 30s. High baritone (to G sharp/B flat) very strong singer. Charismatic political figure. Leader of the revolutionary movement. This character can be Black, Indigenous, API, Latine, MENASA, Mixed or White.

FANTINE - Early 20s - early 30s. Belt up to C, sings to E flat. Dignified and elegant factory worker, struggling to support her fatherless daughter. Later is a pauper, a prostitute, a consumptive and a ghost. Earthy and poignant. Although finally defeated by circumstances she should appear to be strong and a survivor. She puts up a valiant fight against the horrors of her life. This character can be Black, Indigenous, API, Latine, MENASA, Mixed or White.

COSETTE - Late teens to early 20s. Fantine’s daughter (first seen as and played by a child). Delicate, elegant, and vulnerable. Cosette is also loyal, confident, intelligent and has a curiosity and spirit that pushes her to strive for a life of her own beyond the comfortable but sheltered life she was brought up in. Falls in love with and later marries Marius. Soprano (to high C) but a light, young “floating” sound, without heavy vibrato. This character can be Black, Indigenous, API, Latine, MENASA, Mixed or White.

EPONINE - Late teens to 20s. An enormous and beautiful belt voice, with a contemporary edge. Belts to C sharp (sings to E flat). Daughter of the Thénardiers but in no way behaves like them. Fired by an unrequited love for Marius. Gamine, forlorn. Hasn’t learned to disguise her emotions; wears her heart on her sleeve. This character can be Black, Indigenous, API, Latine, MENASA, Mixed or White.

MADAME THENARDIER - 30s-early 40s. Tough, sharp, coarse, boorish, vulgar. Strong character comedienne role. Belter. This character can be Black, Indigenous, API, Latine, MENASA, Mixed or White.

GAVROCHE - Boy, age 7 - 11. 52” tall or less. Spunky street urchin. Lots of personality. Sings very well. This character can be Black, Indigenous, API, Latine, MENASA, Mixed or White.

LITTLE COSETTE AND LITTLE EPONINE - Girls, age 7 - 11. 50” tall or less. Sweet innocent waifs. Pretty soprano voice. This character can be Black, Indigenous, API, Latine, MENASA, Mixed or White.
