Seeking (all roles are available):

Theatre’s casting note: “Because of the short, intense rehearsal schedule, we are open [to] and interested in seeing performers who have done the show before. But it is NOT a requirement.”

Max:

Man, 25-35. Attractive, energetic assistant to Saunders. Earnest and hard-working. In love with Maggie. Max is an aspiring opera singer – actor in this role must be able to sing well enough to get through brief arias, but comedic acting and physical comedy skills are primary. If called back, be prepared to sing (a cappella) 32 bars of an operatic song (in Italian if possible, but not necessary) OR a musical theatre selection in an operatic style. Seeking good, strong voice that sings on pitch, but operatic training is NOT necessary.

Maggie:

20-30. Max’s girlfriend. Saunders’s daughter. Smart and practical, but yearns for something “wonderful and romantic” before she settles down with Max. Appealing but naive young opera enthusiast who is smitten with the idea of Tito Morelli.

Saunders:

45-60. Maggie’s father, the General Manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company. Normally well-organized CEO whose world is crumbling about him. Brusque and authoritarian, with a short fuse.

Tito Morelli:

Italian man, 35-55. World-famous tenor, known also to his fans as “Il Stupendo”. Egocentric opera star/womanizer. Actor must be able to sing well enough to pass as an opera singer, but, as with Max, acting skills trump vocal prowess. Tito is larger than life, full of grand gestures and grand appetites. Has an Italian accent. If called back, be prepared to sing (a cappella) 32 bars of an operatic song (in Italian if possible, but not necessary) OR a musical theatre selection in an operatic style. Seeking good, strong voice that sings on pitch, but operatic training is NOT necessary.

Maria:

Italian, 30-50. Tito’s wife, a very passionate, proud, emotional woman who is possessive of her husband. She also speaks with an Italian accent.

Bellhop:

Man, 20-60. Rabid opera hopeful/enthusiast. Shrewd, opportunistic and determined to audition for Tito. Actor must be able to sing a cappella operatic arias well enough to be recognized. If called back, be prepared to sing (a cappella) 32 bars of an operatic song (in Italian if possible, but not necessary) OR a musical theatre selection in an operatic style. Seeking good, strong voice that sings on pitch, but operatic training is NOT necessary.

Diana:

30-50. Beautiful, voluptuous, ambitious lead soprano at The Cleveland Grand Opera. Will do anything to advance her career. Singing ability not required for this role. Diana is sexy and forceful; she knows what she wants and how to get it.

Julia:

50-70. Chairperson of the Opera Guild. Wealthy, influential high society woman in love with the idea of opera and opera stars – but she’s not the brightest bulb in the universe. Julia is vivacious, charming and passionate about opera.

Theatre’s statement: “NON-TRADITIONAL CASTING IS STRONGLY ENCOURAGED. ALL ETHNIC TYPES WELCOME.”
