A general note: “Laughing Stock” is a backstage farce and most of the characters are types we all know (and perhaps even love). However, it is of great importance that these stereotypes not be pushed too broadly. They are, for the most part, well intentioned theatre people of varying degrees of intelligence, talent, skill and experience to be sure but over-matched by circumstances and a series of ill-advised choices. SEEKING:
Gordon Page:
(40s) Artistic Director of “The Playhouse”, a New England summer stock barn theatre. Well meaning and intelligent, generous and likeable but overly ambitious, always harried, and nearly always a half step behind. Runs like a deer from confrontation of which there is frequently a great deal.
Jack Morris:
(20s) Intelligent, talented, and good looking young actor with loads of promise and plenty of doubts. Leaving the business to go to law School. Real charisma. The young leading man of the company. Plays “Fancourt” in the Playhouse production of “Charley’s Aunt” and Horatio in “Hamlet”
Mary Pierre:
(20s) Actress. Ingenue. Very sexy. Very attractive. Naive. Maybe not the brightest bulb on the tree, but much sharper than at a first impression. Plays Ophelia in the Playhouse production of “Hamlet”
Tyler Taylor:
(30s) Actor. Good looking leading man and knows it. Egotistical and narcissistic womanizer, but ultimately a hard worker and good of heart. He plays the title role in the Playhouse production of “Dracula, Prince of the Undead.”
Vernon Volker:
(50s) Angry and embittered middle aged actor of intelligence and talent who never had a shot — and therefore, angry and embittered – but not without integrity and eventually, good will.
