BREAKDOWN

Hope Summer Repertory 2024 Season

THE LAST FIVE YEARS

SEEKING:

Jaime: Lead, Tenor. Character arcs from an ambitious guy on a promising first date with a dazzling career to someone who is blinded by success and ego. He is very lovable, yet makes unintentional choices that sabotages his own happiness. 25-35 year old male with vocal range between Bb4 & A2.

Catherine: Lead, Mezzo-Soprano. Character arcs from an ambitious, fresh-faced girl in a new relationship to a woman stunned by a betrayal and a divorce that she is only beginning to understand. 25-35 year old female with vocal range between D#5 & F3.

BIG FISH (Small Cast Edition)

SEEKING:

Edward Bloom: (father and beyond, character ages from 35-65). Edward is a charming, charismatic storyteller. A devoted yet absent father nearing the end of his life and wanting to reconnect with his son. He is comfortable in his own skin, but hopes for Will’s approval. He absolutely loves his wife, his son, and telling stories. Has a big voice. Character ages from young father to older sick man. Able to move but little real dance. Songs: Be the Hero, Fight the Dragons, This River Between Us, Start Over, How It Ends. Doubles as: Young Edward – (everything before fatherhood, character ages 18-30). Young Edward is an enthusiastic, optimistic, energetic romantic. He steals our hearts and make us buy into the fabulous myths that he enters. He is the quintessential hometown boy hero. Has a big voice. Very good mover. Songs: Out There on the Road, Time Stops, Closer to Her, Daffodils

Sandra Bloom: (Character ages 25-55). Sandra is patient, calm – the perfect balance to Edwards enthusiasm. She adores and appreciates Edward and tries to bring reconciliation to her husband and son, both of whom she loves. Requires a mellow, ballad voice. Very little movement. Songs: Magic in the Man, I Don’t Need a Roof. Doubles as: Young Sandra – young woman (before married, character ages 15-30). Young Sandra is a lovely, sweet, fresh-faced, innocent young girl excited by the possibilities of life. She appreciates Edward’s romantic viewpoint. Has a big voice, expressive acting ability, and a good bit of dance ability. Songs: Alabama Lambs, Time Stops, Daffodils

Will Bloom (25-35) Edward’s son, a realist and a pragmatist; and the polar opposite of Edward. His journey of reconciliation with his father is the story of the musical. Vocal Range: Tenor C#3-G4. Songs: Strangers, Showdown, What’s Next, Be the Hero-reprise

Josephine Bloom (30-35) Will’s wife, a lovely woman who provides balance for Will’s pragmatism. She supports and helps guide Will’s journey toward reconciliation with his father. Range: Mix/belt to C#5

The Witch/Ensemble (20-40) commanding performer with great confidence and storytelling ability. She convinces Edward to pursue a Big Life without fear. Has belt voice, mezzo soprano. Some dance.

Dr. Bennett/Ensemble (40-65) Kind presence that guides Edward through difficult news. Doubles as Amos - Carnival owner.

Karl the Giant (age 18-40). Edward’s best friend. Karl is shy, exceptionally intelligent, hermit-like, and has a quiet charisma. He needs to have a booming voice and large personality. Should be decently tall, but not a “giant.” Bass voice. Ability to walk on stilts. Songs: On the Road, Start Over.

Jenny Hill/Ensemble (young cheerleader, age 15). Edward’s devoted, first girlfriend, a dreamer. Requires loud belt. Some movement. Also included in the ensemble. Songs: Ashton’s Favorite Son, Out There On The Road. Doubles as Adult Jenny Hill – adult (age 30) Very tired, disillusioned version of the younger Jenny. She has dignity and honesty. She is crucial in helping Will understand Edward and Edward’s motivations. No movement. Also included in the ensemble.

Don Price/Ensemble (high school, college, and mayor, age 20-45). Don is the rival of Edward. For every story that advances Edward there seems to be one halting Don Price. Older, snarky bully. Sandra’s first fiancé. Has a bigger-than-life style. Possible movement but not crucial. Also included in the ensemble. Songs: Out There on the Road, Start Over.

Zacky Price/Ensemble (high school, college, and later, male or female, age 28-40). Nerdy brother (or tomboyish sister) and shadow of Don Price.

DETROIT '67

SEEKING:

Chelle (Michelle): Black female presenting, late 30s, strong, steadfast, firm, and not easily impressed. A widow, mother, and sister. A loving heart beneath her pride.

Lank (Langston): Black male presenting, early 30s, cool, loving, and charismatic. A dreamer. Has a special effect on women – but not a womanizer. Chelle’s younger brother.

Bunny (Bonita): Black female presenting, mid-late 30s, fun, spunky, sexy, and joyful. A friend and sometimes a lover... Never lets nothin’ get her down.

Sly (Sylvester): Black male presenting, late 30s, hip, slick, and sweet-talking. An honest hustler and numbers man. Fiercely loyal. Lank’s best buddy.
