[HAROLD HILL] Male, 30s - 40s. A dynamic and attractive leading man, with energy and charisma to burn. A compelling conman, posing as a traveling salesman, who uses his great warmth and personality to put one over on the folks of River City. Bold, confident and a resolute bachelor until he meets his match in the town librarian. Seeking a skilled and dynamic actor with great depth and personal appeal. Must move and sing well.
[MARIAN PAROO] Female, 20s - 30s. A dynamic and appealing leading lady, with great depth and vulnerability. River City’s guarded and resolute town librarian and music teacher. Artistic, deeply intelligent and strong- willed, she possesses a hidden warmth, vulnerability and sizable romantic streak - just below the surface. Seeking an actor of great skill, with a warm and dynamic voice. Must move well.
[MARCELLUS WASHBURN] Male, 30s to 40s. Comedic character man, with loads energy and appeal. Former friend and conman/colleague of Harold’s who has settled in River City. Immensely affable and well-intentioned, he gets caught up in the scam when Harold enlists his help. Very strong comedic actor, who moves and sings well.
[MRS. PAROO] Female, 40s - early 50s. Warm and funny character actress with credible Irish dialect. The warm-hearted, straight-talking widowed Mother of Marion and 8 year-old, Winthrop. Fiercely loyal to her children, she is a good listener with a strong sense of humor and self. Must move and sing well.
[MAYOR GEORGE SHINN] Male, 50s. Comedic character man, with stature and personality. River City’s bombastic and somewhat hapless Mayor. Full of self- importance and bluster, he is easily distracted as he frequently clashes with new-comer, Harold as well as the young man pursuing his daughter. Very strong comedic actor, who moves and sings well.
[EULALIE MACKECHNIE SHINN] Female, 40s-50s. Top-tier comedic character actress with great comic chops and appeal. Mayor Shinn's wife, and River City’s First Lady. Snobby, status-oriented busybody who conversely possesses an eccentric, artistic side. Travels with a pack of sycophantic gossips. Very strong comedic skills. Should move and sing well.

[OPAL BULONI] Female, 10-12. Caucasian, but should look as young as possible, Strong singer with good belt/contemporary feel) Opal is mature for her age, and very smart. She has arrived in a very small Florida town with her preacher father to start a new life. But adjusting to life without her mom and a single father is complicated for our little heroine. Until she bumps into a big, stray, furry dog which she names, Winn-Dixie, after the grocery store where she runs into him. Completely in love with her dog, Opal confides in him, sings to him, and transforms her little town and life with him. The performer must be extremely comfortable handling dogs. This actress will be trained to work with the dogs by Bill Berloni and she will be giving the dog his commands and on stage cues for his large role in the play. Actresses should be able to sing with straight tone/pop/folk style. No 'legit' vibrato heavy vocal stylings. Singers should prepare a contemporary pop/rock/folk song, musical theater, top 40 or otherwise.
[PREACHER] Male, 40s. Caucasian, Baritone, with strong contemporary feel. Intelligent, and folksy. His alcoholic wife has abandoned him and their sweet young daughter. He bravely brings his daughter to a new little town in Florida. He is a diplomat and gentleman to his congregation and able to inspire love and compassion without fire and brimstone.
[OTIS] Male 20s-30s. Caucasian, Tenor/Bari-Tenor voice. He seems to be a loner or a lonely heart. He is mysterious and open however at first look can be a bit scary, especially to little ones. He has been to jail and the town considers him slow and possibly dangerous. But there is so much more to him inside. And when he sings his songs and plays his guitar a whole, beautiful man emerges. He loves his music. This actor MUST play guitar well.
[DUNLOP DEWBERRY] Male, Early Teens. Caucasian, post pubescent Tenor or Bari-tenor with a contemporary feel. Has a sharp sense of humor and Southern charm. Strong singer.
[AMANDA WILKINSON] Female, 10. Any Ethnicity except Caucasian, strong singer with a contemporary feel. She is a know it all, snobby, sassy and smart, but hides a deep hurt at the death of her brother.
[WOMAN 1] Female, 30s. Caucasian, Mezzo- Soprano/Soprano. Plays Callie Thomas, a former prom queen and wild girl of High School Pretty and well meaning, trying to go from beauty queen to mom is tough for her.
[WOMAN 2] Female, 30’s - 40’s. Any Ethnicity except Caucasian. Plays Millie Wilkinson, Mother who is emotionally closed off to her family after the death of her son. Takes comfort in religion and can't understand her daughter's bad behavior in church.
[MAN 2] Male, 30’s – 40’s. Any Ethnicity except Caucasian, Bari-Tenor. Plays Carl Wilkinson. A man of few words, but a good sense of humor, even though he is still grieving over the loss of his child.
[FRANNY] Female, Mid 50’s- Late 60’s. Any Ethnicity, Mezzo-Soprano/Soprano with strong belt. The kindly yet quirky town librarian. A real old bookworm. She is a great story teller. Takes Opal and Amanda under her wing. Pushes the girls to think for themselves while also looking out for them. Actress must be good singer with great comic chops.
[GLORIA DUMP] Female, 40’s-60’s. African American, Alto with strong belt. A deep southern force of nature. She was a real lost soul who drank, smoked and essentially raised hell. But all that has finally caught up to her and she now lives in this small town and hangs empty liquor bottles on an old oak tree each with a card inside that lists one of her sins. There are many, many bottles on that tree. We need a huge powerful singer with great character sound.

[BILLY ELLIOT] Boy, 10-13. A boy who stumbles upon a ballet class and develops a passion for dance. To him, dance is a way to feel whole and free himself from the problems of life. He finds himself stuck between appeasing family and chasing his newfound love.
[DAD] Male, 35-45. Billy's stoic father. A widowed miner struggling with maintaining a household in lieu of a work strike, he is still deeply scarred by the death of his wife. Billy's dancing initially sends him into a rage but he learns to support his son.
[TONY] Male, 18-25. Billy's brother. A lazy but passionate miner. Hotheaded and scrappy with seemingly no regard of respect for his father, although he shares his disapproval of dance.
[MRS. WILKINSON] Female, 40 to 50. The local ballet teacher who eventually becomes Billy's mentor. Hardened and mouthy, she actually has capacity for caring when she sees promise in Billy. Believes in the power of personal expression through dance.
[MICHAEL] Boy, 10-13. Billy's careless and fun-loving best friend. He lives in the realm of expressing oneself, going so far as to commonly dress in women's clothing.
[DEBBIE WILKINSON] Girl, 9-12. The ballet teacher's daughter. A bit stand-offish and argumentative, her childhood crush on Billy leads her to constantly discourage him.
[GRANDMA] Female, 60-75. Billy's eccentric grandmother. She is forgetful and a little aloof. Despite her inattention, she harbors a bitter resentment towards her dead abusive husband but has found solace through dance.
[GEORGE] Male, 45-50s. The Boxing Instructor, working class.
[MUM] Female, 30’s. Billy’s deceased Mum. Geordie. Strong singer. Warm, compassionate, sympathetic.

[BERNHARDT WICHMANN III (OLD BEN)] Male, follow from mid-60s to 84. Tall. White haired. Scruffy. He is a mute. Must be a strong, detailed physical actor as role requires little speech but he is our protagonist. He has lived through war, tragedy, success and illness and now has settled in his little single room in NYC on East 74th St. Reactive, joyful, sensitive and isolated. Must be able to sing - not huge range. Baritone.
[BERNHARDT WICHMANN III (YOUNG BEN)] Male, follow from 19 to mid-40s. Tall. Lean. Black haired. Smart, handsome with a winning smile. Classic American leading male with big energy. Must be a strong singer. Tenor. Must feel matched/connected to Old Ben. Comfortable mover.
[JORGE GRISALES] Male, late-40s. Columbian. Doorman. Big, jolly man. Warm, caring and cuddly. A good-hearted, family man who arrived in America with hopes of opportunity and a fresh start. He struggles with English and, over time, becomes Ben’s greatest friend. Must be a strong singer. Tenor - Baritone. Comfortable mover.
[JUAN ARIAS] Male, late 40s. Columbian. Doorman. Short, smart, welcoming man. Slicker than Jorge and is a far more competent English-speaker. A joker and, although he also travelled from Columbia in search of a better life, he has already embraced becoming a true New Yorker. Will be required to multi-role.
[PAT] Female, follow from mid 60s to 80s. Small, tough, silver-haired Irish woman. Originally from Rosscrea but has lived in NYC since her early 50s. She has been a nurse, a pharmacist, a divorcee but now she is retired. She lives in Ben’s building, two floors above him, and becomes his care giver and friend. Must be a strong singer. Alto.
[JAMES] Male, follow from early 30s - early 60s. Tall, dark-haired and classically handsome. Ben becomes very close friends with James and there is a suggestion of a romantic connection between them. He is charming and soft in nature. Must be a very strong singer. Pure tone. Tenor. Strong mover.
[HELEN] Female, Mid-20s. Beautiful, soft, gentle-natured. Ben’s older sister. We see her in their hometown of Davenport, which she never leaves. She cares for her brother but struggles with his leaving home. Must be a very strong singer. Soprano. Strong mover. Will be required to multi-role.
[JOAN] Female, Mid-30s - 40s. Wealthy, Upper East Side reporter. Glamorous and eccentric. She became close friends with Ben when he moved into East 74th St. Must be a strong singer. Mezzo-Soprano. Strong mover. Will be required to multi- role.
LUCY/GIRL - Female. 18+. Multi-track role. Young female to play various roles including little girl, Kelsey, aged 10 and Lucy, a kind-hearted New Yorker in her late 20s. Must be confident, versatile soprano, comfortable in different musical styles. Required to sing jazz and opera. Strong mover.

[ANDREW] Male, 23. Caucasian, in search of something beyond the path he thinks life has planned for him after college. In hopes of finding these answers, he sets off on foot to walk the United States and learn from everyday people and their experiences. Baritenor to A5
[KARI] Female, 26. Open ethnicity. Lost in the reality of being a military widow after her husband killed himself after returning from Iraq. She meets Andrew after her car breaks down as she was attempting to drive away from her life. Soprano with Strong Mix to E5
[MOM]- Female, late 40s. Caucasian. Andrew’s mother, who shares a closeness to her son that was forged even stronger after Andrew’s father left them. The idea of her son walking alone across the country terrifies her, but she also knows that this is something he must do. Alto/Mezzo to D5
[DAD]- Male, late 40’s. Caucasian. Andrew’s father, who has had a life of wandering and running from situations. He left Andrew and Andrew’s mother after he was caught having an affair with one of the students at the college where he taught. He and Andrew have had extremely limited interaction since that moment, though he hopes there can be reconciliation one day. (Will also play BARBERSHOP 1 in the opening sequence). [MISS EMMA] Female, 102. Black. She has seen the darkness of life, but chooses to embrace the light as she readies for her “great day.” She finds Andrew in the hospital bed next to her and shares with him some of what she’s learned in her incredibly rich and layered long life. (Will also play the PROFESSOR in the opening sequence) Strong mix/belt to F3 - G5
