The horrific traumas of the Nazi Holocaust continue to affect the lives of three generations of women, consciously and unconsciously.

Seeking:

Renee Eberkohn-Stern:

AVAILABLE ROLE. Woman, early 50s. Rosa’s daughter, a single mother herself, and a highly successful physician. Head of the Neonatology department at a major New York hospital, but her dedication to the care of newborn babies also reflects the emotional damage suffered in her early life. From the outside, she is a confident, attractive career woman, but her emotional life is virtually paralyzed.

Shaina Eberkohn:

AVAILABLE ROLE. Woman, mid 20s. Renee’s daughter. Deeply attached to her grandmother, but relations with her mother are strained. The unspoken conflicts and memories surrounding her upbringing have left her confused as to her own identity. She has dropped out of medical school to seek answers to questions that she cannot even frame.

Rabbi Yakov Eberkohn / Rumkowski:

AVAILABLE TRACK. One actor plays both male characters. Rabbi Yakov: Spectral figure from the past, Rosa’s Hassidic rabbi brother. Wise and eloquent, he tells us the history of the Lodz ghetto, while also attempting to resolve the lingering pain of the three surviving women of his family. Rumkowski: Ruthless chairman of the Lodz ghetto. Jewish, but a mouthpiece for the Nazis. At times, we are aware that it is Yakov simply enacting Rumkowski as he details the ghetto’s history.

Hans / SS Officer:

AVAILABLE TRACK. One actor plays both male characers. Hans: New York business executive. Fit but somewhat smarmy. Out looking for sexual adventure. SS Officer: Immediately threatening, even while pretending to be genial and caring, and ultimately sadistic.

Rosa Eberkohn:

CAST. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary. Elderly survivor of the Lodz ghetto in Poland. Courageous and independent, with a sense of humor that also survived. After the war, as a single mother raising a daughter, she built a career for herself as a millinery designer in New York, keeping the tragedies of her early life deeply buried.
