BREAKDOWN

TOM:
50’s, to 60’s. Hard hands, a furnace of ambition in his gut. He is fiercely loyal to the ones he loves, and demands the same loyalty in return. A neighborhood builder who is determined to become a part of the new high rise construction that’s happening in downtown Chicago. Tom is haunted by the secrets buried in the ‘mud’ of his past, he fought so hard to crawl his way out of.

ANGELO:
30’s heavy frame, big heart. Quiet and cautious - Angelo enters the play having just been released from prison. His sole obsession is to get to what’s left of his shattered family and salvage what remains before the drift sets in.

JOE:
Late 30’s, long and thin. Worn from the world, and the mountain of pain he carries. His brother Angelo’s arrival forces him to face the life he’s been living. He is compelled to tell the truth about the past and immediately play catch up in an attempt save the present he’s had a hand in damaging.

VINNY:
18+ to play 15 or so, quiet and internal. Grieving the loss of his mother and feeling utterly alone and dangerously lost at the opening of the play. He knows he has greatness inside of him, but he is unable to define it. He is secretly anticipating the arrival of his brother Angelo, hoping he proves to be the answer that’s been promised.

FATHER GREVADO:
50's to 70's. Deeply sensitive and wise.

STORYLINE:
An orphaned piano prodigy left to wander the streets alone. His two older brothers at violent ends over competing tales about their father’s tragic death, both tethered to an aging builder determined to leave his mark on the boys, and a cityscape shifting before his eyes. Set in 1957 Chicago, in the lofted annex of a forgotten church and on the steel girders of a skyscraper under construction, DRIFT offers a concussive and heart wrenching glimpse of a family trying desperately to uncover who they are.
