BREAKDOWN
THE PANIC DEFENSE
MAXINE: African-American, transgender woman (18 - early 20s), trying to live her truth; fierce, funny, street-smart, and emotionally perceptive. Dreams of becoming a licensed cosmetologist.
TRAVIS: A white southerner (40 - 50); has an acerbic wit but wounded beneath his sarcasm; uses humor like armor. Travis wants love but expects rejection. He's the emotional anchor of the play's adult relationship storyline.
BENNY: Effeminate, Latinx, or mixed race (18+ to play 15). He represents the terror of adolescence under social scrutiny; he is exploring a new gender identity he cannot really articulate. Bullied because of femininity and neurodivergence.
MIKE: A truck driver (White) (mid-30s - 40s); a small guy who embodies masculinity and loneliness; gentle, and deeply compassionate. He wants redemption as a father, and as someone trying to survive addiction. Conflicted about his bisexual identity.
