The Village Players continues its 94th season with You Can’t Take It With You, the comedic collaboration of George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. It is not your typical “meet the parents” dinner as Alice Sycamore introduces her fiancé’s conservative parents to her eccentric family full of zany personalities, replete with fireworks, xylophones, a ballerina, wrestling, and Marxist propaganda. One of the most popular and successful plays of the last century, You Can’t Take It With You is a madcap, idealistic comedy that reinforces the idea that you can only live life to the fullest by doing whatever makes you happy. This high spirited comedy opened on Broadway in 1936, and played for 838 performances. The play won the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and the screen adaptation won the 1938 Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director. This hit comedy has had several Broadway revivals; the most recent version was the 2014 revival starring James Earl Jones.
'Love, Loss, and What I Wore' is playing through March 18th- April 2nd at St. Dunstan’s at Cranbrook Playhouse. Written by Nora and Delia Ephron of You’ve Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle, this play is like a heart-to-heart with a dear friend over coffee (or wine). Funny. Poignant. Heartfelt. Profound. Perfect for a Girls Night Out. Broadway World Detroit had a chance to talk recently to one of the actresses from the show and the director about their production and why you will not want to miss this show 2 years after it was originally scheduled and what it means to them now.
The Village Players of Birmingham closes its 96th season with the classic musical comedy Guys and Dolls. Running three weekends May 3-19, 2019 at the Village Players of Birmingham.
