ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, BIG FISH and More Set for The Aurora Fox's 30th Season

By:

The Aurora Fox is pleased to announce its 30th season - a Season of Storytellers. Details below!

Once on This Island - book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, music by Stephen Flaherty
Sept. 12 - October 5, 2014

This calypso-flavored re-telling of The Little Mermaid written by the same team that wrote Ragtime and Seussical, tells the story of two different societies on a Caribbean island - one poor, one rich. In almost non-stop song and dance, the show tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl, who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the others side of the her island. When Daniel returns to his people, the gods guide Ti Moune on a treacherous journey to find him. Along the way, she must fight against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.

Red Ranger Came Calling by Berkeley Breathed
November 28 - December 21, 2014

A musical tale based on the true story of cartoonist, Berkeley Breathed's father who, at age nine, insisted on being addressed as the "Red Ranger of Mars." One Christmas during the Depression, the moody young boy meets a crotchety old man named Saunder Clös. Through their encounter, they manage to restore each other's faith in the magic of Christmas and leave an indelible mark on the landscape still visible today! The surprise ending will melt the heart of even the most stubborn Scrooge and grinchly Grinch.

Fully Committed (in the Studio Theatre) by Becky Mode
November 21 - December 28, 2014

Guys like Bobby Flay usually get all the glory in the world of haute cuisine, but what about the poor saps behind the scenes like Sam Peliczowski - an out-of-work actor who mans the phones for a swanky 5-star NY restaurant? From his basement "office", he gets to deal with a slew of desperate callers (socialites, glitterati, pushy tourists, whiny senior citizens and the occasional Mafioso) who will stop at nothing to land a prime reservation. The twist? - a single actor (Steven Burge) plays poor put-upon Sam AND his non-stop parade of callers PLUS the maitre d'hotel, the chef, and assorted others: 40 characters in all!

Read and Rant Production (in the Studio Theatre)
Beets by local playwright Rick Padden (REGIONAL PREMIERE)
January 16 - February 8, 2015

An historical-fiction play that reveals a little known chapter in America's history - inspired by actual events. At the height of WWII, Berthoud, Colorado's industrious sugar beet farmers were expecting a record harvest, but labor was in short supply - with most of the town's young men overseas fighting Germans. Who could help them harvest their beets? Germans. There were 3,000 German POWs being held at Camp 202 in Greeley, CO. Why not put them to work? Beets is a poignant story of bias yielding to circumstance, hatred bowing to compassion and love escaping fences.

Big Fish - the Musical music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, book by John August
(REGIONAL PREMIERE)
February 27 - March 22, 2015

Based on the celebrated novel by Daniel Wallace and the acclaimed Columbia Pictures film directed by Tim Burton, BIG FISH centers on Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman who lives life to its fullest... and then some! Edward's incredible, larger-than-life stories thrill everyone around him - most of all, his devoted wife Sandra. But their son Will, about to have a child of his own, is determined to find the truth behind his father's epic tales. Overflowing with heart, humor and spectacular stage-craft, BIG FISH reminds us why we love going to the theatre - for an experience that's richer, funnier and BIGGER than life itself.

She Kills Monsters by Qui Nguyen (REGIONAL PREMIERE)
April 24 - May 16, 2015

Agnes Evans leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly's Dungeons & Dragons notebook, however, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in an imaginary world that was Tilly's refuge. In this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, and 90s pop culture, acclaimed young playwright Qui Nguyen offers a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all.

The Fox also looks forward to hosting several producing partners again this season, including Ignite Theatre, Theatre Esprit Asia and Athena Project Festival.

Season packages go on sale this Monday, February 24th. Call the Aurora Fox Box Office at 303-739-1970. * Season Subscribers also receive FREE admission to PHAMALY Theatre Company's production of The Fantasticks (January 30 - February 15, 2015).
