BETC Announces 2014 Generations Winner, Simon Fill's BURNING CITIES; Reading Set for 11/8

By:

The Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company (BETC) is proud to announce the winner of our 2014 Generations new play competition: "Burning Cities", by Simon Fill. Generations is a residency program, made possible by the Sustainable Arts Foundation, supporting playwrights who are parents of children under 18 years of age.

Each year, BETC accepts submissions of full-length, unproduced plays. This year, the company received 95 entries from playwrights around the U.S., and as far away as the U.K. and Australia. Submissions were judged anonymously by a panel of readers. Once the winning play was chosen, BETC was pleasantly surprised to discover our winning playwright right here in Boulder.

Simon Fill was recently awarded a playwriting residency by the Yaddo Colony, where he began his full- length play "Burning Cities". His plays have been produced in New York City, regionally, and internationally. He was a member of the Playwrights Project, a small group of playwrights led by Austin Pendleton and in residence at Circle Repertory Theatre. Simon's one-act "Night Visits" premiered at Actors Theatre of Louisville and won the Heideman Award in ATL's National Ten-Minute Play Contest. His play "The Gift" was recently published by Vintage Books in the anthology "Plays For Two." He was an A.S.K. exchange playwright with the Royal Court Theatre and His full-length play "Post Punk Life" was given an Equity workshop by Lincoln Center Theatre.

Simon has an MFA in Theatre from Sarah Lawrence, and teaches a playwriting workshop at the Boulder International Fringe Festival. He is a playwright member of Circle East Theatre Company, and an active member of the Dramatists Guild. He and his spouse live in Boulder, with their nine-year-old daughter and six-year-old son.

As the winning playwright, Fill will receive a $250 prize and a $250 childcare stipend to defray the costs associated with childcare during his residency.

During the weeklong residency, "Burning Cities" will be rehearsed and work-shopped with a director, dramaturg and cast of professional actors,. A public reading of the play will be held at Chautauqua Community House on Saturday, November 8. The play will also be considered for full production in a future BETC season.
