About this studio
Ballet Afrique Contemporary Dance is based at 1050 E 11th Street in East Austin, Texas. Founded in 2008 by East Austin native China Smith, who remains executive director and lead instructor, the organization grew from a wish to expose local children to the arts and to their own cultural heritage. It now comprises a dance academy, a professional contemporary dance company, a youth dance ensemble and community dance classes, with roughly 21 classes and 11 teachers listed. The company's style synthesises ballet, modern and African traditional movement, drawing on folk, classical, jazz, blues, Caribbean and Afro-Latin music to link movement to its African ancestry. Its mission is to use dance to build understanding and appreciation for the cultures and experiences of the African Diaspora.
