Jubilee Theatre's THE MISSISSIPPI DELTA Closes 2/28
Jubilee Theatre continues their twenty-ninth season with the powerful and moving drama by Dr. Endesha Ida Mae Holland, From the Mississippi Delta. Professor Holland, a noted scholar and dramatist, wrote a memoir of the same name in 1997. This powerful story chronicles her journey from poverty and prostitution in the Jim Crow South to civil rights activism, a Ph.D. and an academic career. The production will play through Feb. 28.
The journey begins in Greenwood, Mississippi-the Delta. Born in a rundown, drafty shotgun house to a poor but resourceful black woman, no one could have predicted the odyssey that would become Ida Mae Holland's life. Curious, smart and precocious, young Ida learned from her mother how to dream big dreams, for herself and others, in their impoverished Delta community. From the Mississippi Delta has earned critical acclaim and has been nationally and internationally celebrated as an inspiring dramatic portrayal of the human experience as viewed through the eyes of an African-American woman.
Directed by Phyllis Cicero, From the Mississippi Delta features a cast of three women: Charlet Dupar, Evette Perry-Buchanan, and Yolanda Davis. Designers include set and light design by Michael Skinner, sound design by Brent Nance, and costume design by Chinina Mwukuta.
