A dance scene as vibrant as Houston's cannot sustain itself without new and fresh-minded choreographers and their creations. The UH School of Theatre and Dance and the University Dance Theatre (UDT) student organization reveals a host of new dance artists in the 2009 Emerging Choreographers Showcase, Flirting With Gravity.

All dancers and choreographers in the concert are current students at the University of Houston, working under the direction of Dance Department head and dance community leader, Karen Stokes, as well as faculty members and working choreographers Teresa Chapman, Becky Valls, Jackie Nalett, and Toni Valle.

Stokes and other faculty have coached the students throughout the semester to guide them towards fine-tuning their choreography and preparing their works for the fall showcase.

Under the direction of Stokes, the UH dance program provides the only four-year degree program in Houston. Past student concert performers have gone to dance with various local companies including Travesty Dance Group, Suchu Dance, and Several Dancers Core, among other well-known companies.
