The Amarillo Symphony, (AmarilloSymphony.org), the leader of orchestral music in the Texas Panhandle since 1924, kicks of the 2017-2018 season with Gershwin Rhapsodies on Friday & Saturday, September 22 & 23, 2017 at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts.

The Amarillo Symphony will be joined by Jazz pianist Aaron Diehl to perform Gershwin's iconic Rhapsody in Blue paired with the equally entertaining, but less frequently performed, Second Rhapsody. The concert will also feature Hindemith's Kammermusik No. 1 and Symphonic Metamorphosis.

"I am so thrilled to share this incredible, genre-bending, American inspired music with you all on our season opening concert," said Jacomo Bairos, Music Director and Conductor. "Hindemith and Gershwin are perfect companions as they shared a love for Americana, Jazz, reinvention, and taking the orchestral sound to new levels. Hindemith was obsessed with America's burgeoning Jazz scene and incorporated so many of these traits into his music."

Jazz pianist Aaron Diehl will join the Amarillo Symphony on stage to perform Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and Second Rhapsody. A 31-year-old classically trained pianist and composer, Aaron Diehl has made an indelible mark on the jazz world over the last 15 years. The New York Times jazz critics have extolled Mr. Diehl's "melodic precision, harmonic erudition, and elegant restraint," while the same paper's classical critics have noted, "Mr. Diehl play[s] magnificently."

"Gershwin's iconic Rhapsody in Blue will be in its original envisioned Jazz Band version and will highlight our beloved Amarillo Symphony's ability to play any style," said Jacomo Bairos. Our soloist Aaron Diehl who is a champion and innovator with Gershwin performances will join us on what will be a special night for all of us to remember. Thank you for taking the journey with us, and we are beyond thrilled to start this new season together!"

Gershwin Rhapsodies will be held at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, September 22 and Saturday, September 23 at 7:30 pm.
