Set against the backdrop of the social agitation of the first decade of the 20th Century, "Rube!" is a heavily fictionalized account of Rube Waddell, a dominant left-handed pitcher considered by many to be the strangest man to ever play baseball. Known as much for his off-the-field carousing and exploits--from chasing after fire trucks and wrestling alligators, to rescuing pepole from burning buildings and moonlighting as an actor on Broadway, as his prodigious pitching, Rube left behind glittering statistics as well as a mountain of tall tales. Ten years after Rube threw his final pitch in the big leagues, legendary sportswriter Grantland Rice feels it's now time to track down those who played alongside Rube and sort through all the outlandish stories and try to figure out who the "real" Rube Waddell was.But the more Rice reports, the taller the tales grow.
