South Coast Repertory to Open TYA 2014-15 Series with CHARLOTTE'S WEB, 11/7-23
South Coast Repertory begins its 2014-15 Theatre for Young Audiences series with the literary classic, E.B. White's Charlotte's Web, adapted by Joseph Robinette. The heartwarming children's fable about friendship and love, directed by Laurie Woolery, runs Nov. 7-23 on the Julianne Argyros Stage. Tickets are available online at www.scr.org.
A pig was born. His name is Wilbur. And he is destined to become tomorrow's bacon-until a spider with amazing skills hatches a plan. As she spins her unique web to give Wilbur's life new meaning, a remarkable friendship is formed in a story that has delighted children and adults alike for more than 60 years.
Woolery finds herself right at home at South Coast Repertory-she got her start in theatre through SCR's Theatre Conservatory program in 1989 and eventually became director of the conservatory from 1999 to 2005.
"SCR is my artistic home," Woolery said. "Just as Fern has a coming of age in Charlotte's Web, I had my own coming of age here."
Woolery has directed shows across the country, is a playwright and currently associate director of public works at The Public theater in New York City. Her past SCR directing credits include her own plays, Orphan Train: The Lost Children and Bliss. SCR's Teen Players recently collaborated with Woolery and revived Bliss last season. Her other works as a playwright include Lola in Lincolnlandia, which was produced at Plaza de la Raza Youth Theater/REDCAT, Salvadorian Moon/African Sky and Not Too Late at Cornerstone Theater Company, where she is a former associate artistic director and ensemble member.
The cast for Charlotte's Web includes Larry Bates, Brad Culver, Fran De Leon, Lovelle Liquigan, Zilah Mendoza and Nicholas Mongiardo-Cooper.
The design and creative team includes Nephelie Andonyadis, scenic design; Trevor Norton, co-scenic design; Soojin Lee, costume design; Jeremy Pivnick, lighting design; Corinne Carillo, sound design; Jackie Hill, production manager; and Aurora DeLucia, stage manager.
