Max Raabe und das Palast Orchester

Music
Presented by Irvine Barclay Theatre
Wednesday, April 05, 2017 at 8pm

Enjoy a musical evening of wit and high style. Based in Berlin, Max Raabe and his ensemble have an incredible range and sly humor that evoke the musical glory of the 20's and 30's with a modern sensibility.

From Berlin, the theatrical and charismatic baritone, Max Raabe, leads his stellar 12-piece Palast Orchester in the high-style popular music of the 20's and 30's. He is a singer and entertainer of incredible range and sly humor. He can capture the cunning of the cabaret star, the confidence of the Bel Canto hero and the nonchalance of the carefree jazz singer. The band is equally on target with tunes from the glory days of the American movies or German chansons from the turbulent Weimar Republic. Raabe and his orchestra are slick and sophisticated, nostalgic but distinctly modern, expert and entertaining, and simply original.

HAPA

Music
Presented by Irvine Barclay Theatre
Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 8pm

Like the islands themselves, HAPA's music is an amalgam of influences ranging from ancient Polynesian rhythms and chants to the strummed ballads of Portuguese fishermen and Mexican cowboys. Add to this a dose of American acoustic folk/rock, and you have what has been described as the "most exciting and beautiful contemporary Hawaiian music the world knows!" (Maui Times) These disparate ingredients, blended together musically in the Pacific, create the unique flavor of HAPA's music: "beautiful, fragile, spiritual, powerful...." (L.A. Times)
