With this "Windy City Preview," the U.S. Coast Guard Band warms up for its December appearance at the Midwest Conference in Chicago, one of the most highly-regarded conferences for performing musicians, educators, and students in the United States. The USCB performs classic selections from three centuries of music, with works by Richard Wagner and Sergei Prokofiev, among others. Assistant Conductor Richard Wyman conducts "Recoil" by Joseph Schwanter, which was commissioned in 2004 by the Raymond and Beverly Sackler New Music Foundation at the University of Connecticut. Featured soloists are Chief Musician Joshua Thomas in Ingolf Dahl's virtuosic Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Musician 1st Class Lisa Williamson in three theatrical Cabaret Songs by esteemed composer William Bolcom, who will be in residence at Hartt in December.

The United States Coast Guard Band is one the nation's elite premier military bands. Based at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, the ensemble frequently tours the state and the nation and in 2008 became the first premier American military band to perform a concert tour of Japan.

The Hartt School is the comprehensive performing arts conservatory of the University of Hartford that offers innovative degree programs in music, dance, and theatre. With more than 400 concerts, recitals, plays, master classes, dance performances, and musical theatre productions a year, performance is central to Hartt's curriculum.
