The Hartt School Presents the Hartt Symphony Orchestra
The Hartt School presents the Hartt Symphony Orchestra on Friday, October 1, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium on the University of Hartford's West Hartford campus. This concert of orchestral masterpieces is conducted by Edward Cumming, who serves as Hartt's Interim Director of Orchestral Activities for the 2010-2011 academic year. Cumming is the longtime music director of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. This concert includes Dukas's Sorcerer's Apprentice, Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, Ravel's La Valse, and Dvorak's Symphony No. 8. The Hartt School Presents Foot in the Door
The Hartt School presents Foot in the Door, formerly the Hartt Contemporary Players Ensemble, on Wednesday, October 6, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium on the University of Hartford's West Hartford campus. The first concert in the series explores the tradition of viewing the land as a source of mystical inspiration. Visionary Landscapes starts with Charles Ives' classic The Unanswered Question, includes George Crumb's open and expansive Dream Sequence, the roaring musical machine of Edgard Varèse's masterpiece Intégrales, and a new work for oboe and improvising percussion by Hartt faculty composer David Macbride. Concluding the concert is a major work for percussion, strings, and harp by Alaskan composer John Luther Adams (one of the undisputed heirs of this tradition), In a Treeless Place, Only Snow. The Hartt School presents an Evening with Guitar on Thursday, October 7, at 7:30 PM, in Berkman RecitAl Hall on the University of Hartford's West Hartford campus. This concert features solo and chamber music performances by undergraduate and graduate students in the classical guitar department. Admission is free. The Hartt School Presents Children of Eden
The 2010-2011 Theatre Season opens with Children of Eden, on Thursday, October 7, through Saturday, October 9, at 7:30 PM, and Sunday, October 10, at 3:00 PM, in the Kent McCray Theater, Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center, 35 Westbourne Parkway, Hartford. Directed by Hartt faculty member Ralph Perkins, Children of Eden is the sweeping musical by Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the music and lyrics for the popular musicals Wicked, Godspell, and Pippin, and lyrics for the films Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Enchanted. Based on the Book of Genesis, Children of Eden tells the Bible story from the Creation, through the time of Noah and the Flood. The show examines the age old conflict between parents and children. The Hartt School Presents the Hartt Wind Ensemble
The Hartt School presents the Hartt Wind Ensemble on Friday, October 8, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium on the University of Hartford's West Hartford campus. In this first concert of the 2010-2011 season, the Hartt Wind Ensemble features two new works by emerging composers Kevin Puts and Roshanne Etezady. In addition, the Ensemble features acclaimEd Hartt cello professor Mihai Tetel playing the Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra by Jaques Ibert. The Hartt School Presents the Richard P. Garmany Chamber Music Series
The Hartt School presents An Evening with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, part of the Richard P. Garmany Chamber Music Series, on Thursday, October 14, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium on the University of Hartford's West Hartford campus. Spend an evening with the country's premier chamber music organization, known to millions from its many appearance on PBS. The Hartt concert roster of artists includes violinists Ani and Ida Kavafian, violist Paul Neubauer, and clarinetist David Shifrin. This Series has been made possible by a grant from the Richard P. Garmany Fund at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. A special pre-concert dinner precedes this performance and begins at 6:00 PM in the University's 1877 Club. Under the direction of Matthew Aubin, The Hartt Symphony Band's first concert of the 2010-2011 season, entitled "Celebrating the Americas," features music of the Americas. Works include the "Zacatecas-Mexican March" by the Mexican composer Genaro Codina and Suite of Old American Dances by Robert Russell Bennett. "La Fiesta Mexicana" by 100-year old composer H. Former Hartt Dean Malcolm Morrison directs a cast of more than 40 in this Royal National Theatre award-winning play, which focuses on the lives of two orphans whose lives become intertwined in this episode of British social history. Hartt Faculty Members Steve Larson, viola, Carlynn Savot, cello, and Pi-Hsun Shih, piano, are joined by Hartt alumna Annie Trépanier, violin, for an afternoon of wonderful chamber music. The program includes two vividly exciting compositions by another Hartt graduate, Dan Roman: Passing Puntos for Piano Trio and Música de Palladium for Piano Quartet, as well as Bohuslav Martinu's Madrigals for Violin and Viola and Johannes Brahms' Trio in a minor Op.114 for Viola, Cello, and Piano.
