Clarke's status as the most famous "saloon comic" in Boston during the 1980s was captured in the 2006 documentary, "When Standup Stood Out," which details his early career and affiliations with other Boston comics, including good friends Steven Wright and Denis Leary. In 1980, he wrote and starred in a local television show, "Lenny Clarke's Late Show," featuring Wright and Leary, with fellow Boston comic, and roommate, Martin Olson. He has also starred in his own sitcom, "Lenny," and appeared in "Contest Searchlight," "The Job," "The John Larroquette Show" and "It's All Relative," and can be seen in such films as "Monument Ave.," "Fever Pitch" and "Southie."
Clarke is also very involved with the Boston sports scene, appearing alongside ESPN columnist Bill Simmons in ESPN's 30 for 30, "4 Days in October," as a narrator giving insight on the 2004 ALCS comeback by the Red Sox against the Yankees. He is also an occasional guest on WEEI radio in Boston, and has been known to show his support for various Boston politicians over the years.
