On April 2, 2013, the city of La Plata, capital of the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, suffered a tragic flood that took more than fifty lives and left many of its inhabitants in a state of poverty.
The Archdiocese of Hartford, The Rotary Club of Avon-Canton, The University of Hartford Hartt School Choruses and Wind Ensemble, The New Haven Chorale, The New Haven Symphony Orchestra, The Hartford Chorale and The Mendelssohn Choir, will unite forces to help the devastated people of La Plata with two concerts at The Cathedral of Saint Joseph: Understanding and Common Ground, May 2, 2013 at 8:00 pm; and The Dream of Gerontius, May 3, 2013 at 7:30 pm.
What are the needs in La Plata? With the coming of winter in the Southern Hemisphere, the needs in La Plata are blankets, shoes, socks, sweaters, etc. The Rotary Club of Avon/Canton, CT will be working directly with the Rotary Club in Ensenada/La Plata to ensure that all donated and locally purchased items are given to those in need.
Music for Music: In addition to the items mentioned above, a portion of the funds collected will be allocated to the Conservatorio de Musica Gilardo Gilardi, a public music school that teaches more than 1,800 young students. The Conservatorio, founded by Alberto Ginastera, lost many instruments during the flood including nine pianos and all of the percussion instruments. This school is the only source of musical education for those who cannot afford private instruction. The school is free and has produced many world-renowned musicians.
Hartford Concerts for Charities bring you these amazing concert masterworks, featuring more than 700 musicians. All concert free-will offerings given at the door will be allocated to a fund to help the people of La Plata.
