Dr. Vanessa L. Bond Named Assistant Professor of Music Education at the Hartt School

The Hartt School of the University of Hartford todya announced that Dr. Vanessa L. Bond has been appointed Assistant Professor of Music Education beginning in September, at the start of the 2012-2013 academic year.

Dr. Bond specializes in early childhood/elementary general music education, choral music education, and world music pedagogy. Her research focuses on the musical lives of young children and the application of the Reggio Emilia early childhood approach principles to music education. She has presented her research at local, state, and national conferences including NAfME, AERA, Mountain Lake Colloquium, and OMEA.

A frequent presenter in the Cleveland area, she has provided workshops for the Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Music Settlement, and the Cleveland Institute of Music. Bond was the music education consultant for the Cleveland Orchestra in conjunction with the PNC Foundation Grow Up Great with the Arts initiative. Previously, she taught elementary general/vocal music in Montgomery County (Maryland) Public Schools, adjunct voice at Gettysburg College, and was a professional chorister with the Master Chorale of Washington (DC).

Music Education Division Director John Feierabend stated, "Dr. Bond brings much valued experience and expertise. She beautifully rounds our department as a dynamic choral music educator and a qualitative music researcher." Hartt Dean Aaron Flagg also noted, “Vanessa Bond was the unanimous choice of our committee and brings an energetic personality, as well as a diverse mix of skills and interests, including a great comfort with emerging technologies in the classroom, that will benefit the Division, The Hartt School, and the University as a whole.”

Dr. Bond is a member of the National Association for Music Education, American Educational Research Association, College Music Society, American Choral Directors’ Association, American Orff-Schulwerk Association, Dalcroze Society of America, and the North American Reggio Emilia Alliance.

Dr. Bond earned her Ph.D. in Music Education from Case Western Reserve University, Master of Music in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from The Pennsylvania State University, and Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Gettysburg College.
