New Stage Adaptation of John Hughes' THE BREAKFAST CLUB to Open Warehouse Theatre's 2016 Season

By:

Warehouse Theatre will open its 2016 season with a new stage adaptation of John Hughes' classic 1980s teen comedy The Breakfast Club. The play will receive its Central Ohio premiere at Warehouse Theatre beginning with a preview performance on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at MadLab Theatre (227 N. Third Street).

The production will be directed by Warehouse Artistic Director Kristofer Green and will officially open on Friday, January 22 continuing through Saturday, January 30, 2016

The Breakfast Club, John Hughes' coming of age comedy about a group of high school students sentenced to a day in detention, is one of the most beloved films of all time. Now, 30 years after it's theatrical release the students of Shermer High are as relevant as ever.

The story follows five high school students who are sentenced to a day-long detention in a prison-like school library. Claire, the princess; Andrew, the jock; John, the criminal; Brian, the brain; and Allison, the basket case begin the day with nothing in common, each bound to his/her place in the high school caste system. Yet the students bond together when faced with the villainous, power hungry principal, Mr. Vernon who has decided to "mix things up" by having the students write an essay explaining "who they are".

At first it seems the differences between them would make it impossible for them to relate to one another, but soon those differences are exactly what bring them together. On the journey, each has a chance to tell their story. They learn that things aren't exactly as they seem and when the day ends their lives will never be the same again.

John Hughes is best known as the writer/director of the classic 1980s teen-oriented comedies Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, She's Having a Baby and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. A prolific writer, his screenplays includes National Lampoon's Vacation, Mr. Mom, European Vacation, Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful, The Great Outdoors, Uncle Buck, Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, and Planes, Trains & Automobiles. He also wrote the screenplays for Maid in Manhattan, Drillbit Taylor and the Beethoven franchise under the pseudonym Edmond Dantès, after the protagonist of Alexandre Dumas' novel The Count of Monte Cristo.

The Breakfast Club will feature Layne Roate (John Bender), Megan Lear (Claire Standish), Mike Writtenberry (Brian Johnson), Kevin Tate (Andrew Clark), Dakota Thorn (Allison Reynolds), Roddey Nagy (Richard Vernon) and Jordan Berman (Carl).
