The Cleveland Orchestra Announces Gordon Square Residency

The Cleveland Orchestra presents its inaugural neighborhood residency in Northeast Ohio from May 11 through 17, 2013, in Cleveland's Gordon Square Arts District. During this first residency, the Orchestra will offer 16 events in the community throughout the week, including performances by Cleveland Orchestra musicians, ensembles from the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra and Youth Chorus, a Cleveland Orchestra concert preview, and educational programs for local students. All of the events will be free and open to the public. Leaders and representatives from Gordon Square businesses and associations have partnered with the Orchestra to plan and host the week's activities.

The Cleveland Orchestra at home in Gordon Square begins with performances by Cleveland Orchestra musicians Frank Rosenwein and Jeffrey Rathbun, performing oboe duets, on Saturday, May 11 at Gypsy Beans & Baking Co. at 10:30 a.m. Cellist Paul Kushious will perform at Stockyard Meats grocery store at noon. PNC Musical Rainbow: "Spectacular Strings," a 30-minute narrated and interactive performance for children ages 3-6, will be presented at 11 a.m. the same day at La Sagrada Familia by Cleveland Orchestra violinist Alexandra Preucil and cellist Alan Harrell. Actors from Cleveland Public Theatre and Sonja Braaten Molloy, violinist, Lembi Veskimets, violist, and Martha Baldwin, cellist, from the Orchestra, will perform works influenced by William Blake at 6 p.m. that evening, prior to a CPT performance of There Is a Happiness That Morning Is by Mickle Maher, a play that uses Blake's Songs of Innocence and of Experience integrally in the script.

A Cleveland Orchestra chamber ensemble including Chul-In Park, violin, Richard Weiss, cello, Kevin Switalski, bass, and Joela Jones, accordion will perform tango music by Astor Piazzolla at Battery Park Wine Bar on Sunday, May 12, at 6 p.m.

The Capitol Theatre hosts a screening of a portion of The Cleveland Orchestra's Bruckner Symphony No. 4 performance filmed at the beautiful baroque Abbey of St. Florian, near Linz, Austria, on Monday, May 13, at 9 a.m. Prior to the screening of the Orchestra's performance, Gordon Square residents and artists will be seen on-screen in a brief neighborhood residency preview produced by Ohio City's Northwater Partners. The screenings will be followed by a question-and-answer session with cellist Charles Bernard and violinist Sonja Braaten Molloy about performing on tour. Free coffee and pastries will be provided. At 5 p.m. that day, 17 Orchestra musicians and staff will join young people from the neighborhood in a soccer game at the Michael J. Zone Recreation Center.

In partnership with the City Club of Cleveland, 90.3 WCPN ideastream will broadcast Around Noon with The Cleveland Orchestra at home in Gordon Square, hosted by Dee Perry, on Tuesday, May 14, at noon in Reinberger Auditorium. Panelists include Joan Katz Napoli, Cleveland Orchestra director of education and community programs, Sean Watterson, co-owner, Happy Dog, and Matt Zone, Cleveland city councilman, ward 15. Later that day, at 6:15 p.m., the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus Chamber Ensemble, under the direction of Daniel Singer, will perform at Sweet Moses soda fountain and treat shop. At 7 p.m. at the Happy Dog, Assistant Conductor James Feddeck and flutist Joshua Smith will preview the Gordon Square Cleveland Orchestra concert, speaking about the music on the program.

On Wednesday, May 15, at 6:30 p.m., members of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, including Karissa Huang, piano and flute, Michael Bednarsky, saxophone, Sameer Apte, cello, Alexandria Ballinger, clarinet, Laura Hundert, clarinet, Sarah Zydiak, horn, Michael Bertram, piano, Stuart Englehart, bassoon, and Helen Peyrebrune, cello, will perform at St. Augustine Health Campus. A Cleveland Orchestra bass quartet - Mark Atherton, Charles Carleton, Henry Peyrebrune, and Derek Zadinsky performs at Spice Kitchen + Bar at 7 p.m. The Happy Dog presents Classical Revolution and the Ensemble HD Live at the Happy Dog Record Release Party at 8 p.m.

The Cleveland Orchestra performs a free concert at St. Colman Catholic Church on Thursday, May 16, at 7:30 p.m. The performance marks the first time the Orchestra has performed on the west side of Cleveland since 1980. Assistant Conductor James Feddeck leads the program, which includes Mendelssohn's Overture: The Hebrides, Prokofiev's Classical Symphony, Chaminade's Concertino in D major for Flute and Orchestra, with principal flute Joshua Smith, Ravel's Pavane pour une infante défunte, and Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio espagnol. St. Colman Church will host a post-concert reception for the Orchestra and audience members. General admission tickets will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis at Battery Park Wine Bar, Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization, Gypsy Beans & Baking Co., Happy Dog, St. Colman Catholic Church, Spice Kitchen + Bar, Stockyard Meats, Sweet Moses, and Michael J. Zone Recreation Center beginning on Saturday, April 27, during regular business hours.

The Orchestra will perform an Education Concert at St. Colman Church on Friday, May 17, at 11 a.m., conducted by James Feddeck. The program includes Chaminade's Concertino in D major for Flute and Orchestra, with principal flute Joshua Smith, and Britten's The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, narrated by Cleveland city councilman Matt Zone. Students from Watterson-Lake Elementary, H. Barbara Booker Elementary, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel will attend the concert. That evening, Cleveland Orchestra chamber ensembles including Daniel McKelway, clarinet, Barrick Stees, bassoon, Jeffrey Rathbun, oboe, Carolyn Gadiel Warner, piano, Tanya Ell, cello, Robert Woolfrey, clarinet, Brian Thornton, cello, Marisela Sager, flute, Scott Dixon, bass, Jack Sutte, trumpet, Joshua Smith, flute, and Jacob Nissly, percussion will perform at 6 p.m. at 78th Street Studios, and at 9 p.m. in Survival Kit Gallery.

Cleveland Orchestra musicians and guests first performed at the Happy Dog in Gordon Square in June 2010. Following a sold-out concert, they began appearing regularly as Ensemble HD. The Cleveland Orchestra began a partnership with the Happy Dog to bring patrons from the neighborhood to Severance Hall (Gordon Square Goes to the Orchestra) beginning in the fall of 2010, and continue to do so twice each season. Gordon Square Goes to the Orchestra returns on Friday, May 24, 2013, at KeyBank Fridays@7 at Severance Hall.
