STAGE TUBE: Cleveland Theater District Unveils World's Largest Outdoor Chandelier Today
Cleveland is home to the second largest performing arts district, Playhouse Square, and today, May 2 they will unveil the world's largest outdoor chandelier. Scroll down to see a video about the project!
Playhouse Square is second only in seats in a contiguous location to Lincoln Center. It boasts nine theaters and is a major regional tourism draw. Forty years ago, the historic 1920's era theaters very nearly met a wrecking ball, making this transformation suitably more dramatic.
Years of renovations and neighborhood improvements are being capped by the unveiling of the 20-foot chandelier (short video about the chandelier), supported by Cleveland-based GE Lighting, amid a $16 million "Times Square" style streetscape that will make the district a signature destination for locals and visitors.
Playhouse Square Foundation is the management company behind the neighborhood investment, and their unique business model generates revenue in equal part from ticket sales and real estate deals. They also own the theater buildings and other adjacent property. On top of managing 2,000+ performances annually, the Foundation has revitalized underused space in the downtown neighborhood, creating hundreds of apartments that were quickly snatched up, office space for tech companies and trendy street-level restaurants.
