PlayhouseSquare Announces Performances And Collaborations For 2010-11 Season

By: Aug. 23, 2010

As PlayhouseSquare readies for its 2010-2011 season, East 14th Street is poised to welcome new life and activity to the downtown neighborhood. Long considered a vital entryway into PlayhouseSquare, East 14th Street is the home to two theaters (Hanna Theatre and the 14th Street Theatre), restaurants and businesses. A greater number of guests are expected this year on E. 14th Street due to an increased number of planned performances and a new pedestrian-friendly streetscape.

In recent months, the street has undergone a complete streetscape redesign in order to extend the pedestrian-friendly aesthetics of Euclid Avenue onto East 14th. Spurred on by PlayhouseSquare and jointly sponsored through the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), the project includes ornamental street lighting, expanded decorative brick sidewalks with L.E.D. lighting, trees & tree pits, public art, granite curbs, outdoor seating, and convenient pull-off & drop-off parking, all with the goal of encouraging leisurely patronage within the neighborhood.

PlayhouseSquare has increased its own programming in the theater spaces for the new season, scheduling 179 performances, up from 42 last season. A portion of this programming increase is the result of reaching out to local groups such as the Beck Center, Cleveland Public Theatre and Last Call Cleveland to produce their work at PlayhouseSquare for the first time. "Cleveland has such a wealth of great performing arts talent," said Gina Vernaci, PlayhouseSquare's Vice President of Theatricals. "As the community's performing arts center, it makes sense for us to offer on our stages an entertaining mix of the best of Cleveland's locally produced work alongside intimate touring shows."

"We are excited that PlayhouseSquare recognizes the quality of our work and is providing the Beck Center with an opportunity to reach a wider audience," commented Cindy Einhouse, President & CEO of the Beck Center. "Altar Boyz enjoyed a terrific run at the Beck Center, and we are pleased to bring this fantastic show back to Northeast Ohio." Raymond Bobgan, Executive Artistic Director of Cleveland Public Theatre said, "The PlayhouseSquare partnership is a fantastic opportunity for CPT to reach a broader audience and expose CPT to patrons who may not have previously experienced our adventurous approach to theatre." Last Call Cleveland has their own take on the news of performing at PlayhouseSquare, visit www.playhousesquare.org/e14thstreet to view their comedic video.
