Playhouse on the Square to Present HAIRSPRAY, 6/20-7/13

By:

It's 1962, the '50s are out, and change is in the air. Baltimore's Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion - to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show" and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. But can a trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the program's reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her 'do? Only in Hairspray!

This remount of the popular 2010 production is directed by Dave Landis and features many of the same artists. Resident Company Member Courtney Oliver reprises her Ostrander Award-winning role of Tracy Turnblad. Company Members Jordan Nichols, Carla McDonald, and David Foster reprise their roles. Ken Zimmerman returns as Edna Turnblad. New principals to the production include Company Members Michael Detroit (Miss Saigon; Les Miserables) and Caroline Simpson (Gypsy) as Wilbur Turnblad and Penny Pingleton respectively, with Cassie Thompson as Amber Von Tussle, and Madisen White as Little Inez (The Color Purple; Annie). Arthella Williams (The Color Purple) makes her leading debut as Motormouth Maybelle. Guest artist Napoleon Douglas is featured as Seaweed Stubbs.

Hairspray runs June 20 - July 13 at Playhouse on the Square. The Pay What You Can performance is Thursday, June 26 at 8pm. Playhouse on the Square is located at 66 S. Cooper Street.
