The Managing Director will work with Raven’s Artistic Director Cody Estle to lead its artists, Board of Directors, donors, and staff in realizing the theatre’s artistic potential and ensuring its place in the Chicago theatre community. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors and is reviewed annually. Raven owns its space in the Edgewater neighborhood on the northside of Chicago. The building houses two stages as well as office and storage space. The theatre has five full-time and two part-time staff members. RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: Oversight of and active participation in development and marketing activities

Supervision of Development and Marketing Managers

Liaison with the Board of Directors on fund-raising activities

Lead institutional fund-raising with foundations, corporations and government agencies

Oversee communication relating to fund-raising and marketing with donors and patrons

Oversight of financial management of the theatre

Manage the financial operations of the organization

Manage the creation of the annual budget and operate the theater within budgeted parameters

Provide financial reports to the Finance Committee and to the entire Board of Directors

Provide financial analysis and recommendations to guide the organization’s financial decisions

Manage, coach, and supervise all non-production employees except those who report to the Artistic Director

Oversee recruiting, training, coaching, and retention of staff

Ensure compliance with the theatre’s Code of Conduct

Ensure compliance of the theatre employment practices with local, state, and federal guidelines

Foster a culture of teamwork, generous collaboration, clear communication, effective delegation, and mutual support

External Relations Serve alongside the Artistic Director as a key representative of the organization in the community, including the cultivation of donors, funding institutions, and government agencies

Support and attend fundraising events, 1st reads, opening nights, and other events of the organization

Board Relations Work with the Artistic Director and Board President to support the development and effective operation of the Board of Directors

Work with the Board President to identify and to prioritize work of the Board of Directors

Provide bi-monthly written reports to the Board of Directors

Work to grow the membership on the Board of Directors through active cultivation and recruitment

Serve as a member of the Board of Directors

Serve as an active member of (at least) the Finance and Fundraising committees of the Board of Directors

Reporting The Managing Director reports to the Board of Directors and oversees the administrative staff. Qualifications Prefer a bachelor’s degree in arts administration, non-profit administration, or business

An interest in theatre

Management experience

Experience working with a non-profit organization and with fund-raising

Experience interacting with boards and funders

Experience in grant writing

We need a candidate who: Combines business acumen with good management skills

Is a charismatic communicator with the ability to establish long-lasting, productive relationships with the Board of Directors, the staff, and the theatre’s community of patrons and funders

Has a demonstrated ability to generate earned income and contributed revenue

The Managing Director is a full-time, exempt employee. Compensation, including salary and benefits, will be competitive for an organization of Raven’s size. Raven is an equal opportunity employer.
