Assistant Professor of African American Theatre and Performance



COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON is accepting applications for a nine-month, tenure-track appointment for an Assistant Professor of African American Theatre and Performance in the Department of Theatre and Dance (THTR), which begins August 16, 2021. The Department of Theatre and Dance is NAST accredited offering BA and MAT degrees in Theatre and a BA in Dance. Housed in THTR, this line is affiliated with the African American Studies Program (AAST, School of Languages, Cultures and World Affairs).



We are seeking a candidate with specializations in African American Theatre, Directing, and Acting. Secondary areas of specialization are open, but may include: Musical Theatre, Movement, Voice for the Actor, African diasporic performance traditions (Caribbean, Afro-Latin cultures, Africa, etc.), Global Theatre, and other areas of expertise.



Responsibilities include teaching classes in African American Theatre, Directing, Acting, introductory theatre courses, and/or related areas; maintaining a record of creative, artistic, and/or scholarly achievements; serving as an academic advisor; assisting in recruitment activities; serving on departmental and college committees; and participating and mentoring in THTR productions as a director and in other capacities. The successful candidate may also teach the “Artist Practicum” or other classes in AAST.



Qualifications:

MFA or PhD required by August 15, 2021;

Professional experience in theatre directing and performance;

Prior undergraduate teaching experience strongly preferred.

The African American Studies Program befits its unique location and the history of the Lowcountry region for African descended people. AAST works with key institutions, including the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture, the program in the Carolina Lowcountry and Atlantic World (CLAW), and the newly established Center for the Study of Slavery in Charleston (CSSC) as well as 24 affiliated faculty.
