2020 Apprentice and Internship Positions - Cape Playhouse

Apprentice & Intern Program



The Playhouse has long been a training ground for emerging technicians and artisans by providing the unprecedented experience of working alongside the top directors, designers, and actors in American theatre.



The Cape Playhouse is currently accepting resumes for Apprenticeships and Internships for our 2020 Summer Season.



Apprentice Positions

Offered to individuals currently enrolled in a program of study or early career professionals. Apprentices receive a weekly stipend. Limited housing is available.



Company Manager Apprentice

The Company Manager/Arts Management apprentice is responsible for assisting with standard theatrical operations, artist travel and lodging and must interact successfully with a wide range of constituencies including artists, staff, travel vendors, lodging vendors, and the community in general. Must have a car – mileage reimbursed.



Wardrobe Apprentice

Responsibilities include assisting with alterations, costume maintenance, laundering/dry cleaning, maintaining dressing rooms, dressing performers before and during performances, coordinating the receiving and returning of costume packages, maintaining wardrobe work space. Experience with wig supervision and maintenance is highly desired.

Essential are communication and interpersonal skills, sewing (regular and industrial machine), ironing, altering, laundering. Must be organized, tactful, completely self-reliant, and detail oriented in a fast-paced environment. Candidates must be exceptionally professional and feel comfortable working with top directors, creatives and actors in American theatre.



Electrics Apprentice

The electrician apprentice will provide support for the design of each show in our season. The Electrics Apprentice, with guidance and mentoring from the Master Electrician, is responsible for running and maintaining the current show, while also prepping the upcoming production. Experience with the upkeep or maintenance of equipment is preferred. Knowledge of moving lights, and programing of console is helpful.



Carpentry Apprentice

The candidates must have a developed understanding of scenic construction, desire to learn new skills, and ability to carry a 4X8 sheet of plywood alone. The carpenters will contribute heavily to the building, installing, and striking of each set throughout the season – and will be required to be on the run crew of complex shows.



Applicants must have shop experience.



Sound Apprentice

This candidate will be responsible for assisting with the installation and strike of rental sound package at the top and bottom of the season, reconfiguring the system to meet the needs of each show, and running soundboard or serving as A1 for each performance of the Mainstage shows.



Based on the experience of the engineer, the position also has the opportunity to serve as the sound engineer for our children’s shows.



Props Apprentice

The Props Apprentice will assist the Props Heads with research, sourcing items and purchasing (locally, online), borrowing, renting, furniture upholstery, hand props, independent set dressing, and building of props.



Scenic Charge Apprentice

The scenic artist apprentice will assist on all paint treatments of all scenic elements for all mainstage productions and additional elements such as props and set dressing. The Scenic Artist Apprentice will be mentored by the Scenic Charge. Minimum of one year of paint experience and knowledge of proper usage of paint department tools, techniques, and materials required.



Stage Manager Apprentice

The stage manager apprentice will participate in the pre-production, coordinate communication between rehearsals in NYC and the theatre, serve as an assistant stage manager for all mainstage productions, and stage manage our children’s theatre. Qualified candidates also have the opportunity to serve as the assistant production manager.



Minimum of one year of stage management experience required. The stage manager will work with top designers in American theatre for each production. Candidates must be exceptionally professional and feel comfortable working with very established directors, creatives and actors.



Director of Education Apprentice

Over the course of our twelve-week summer season, the Playhouse offers three-day and five-day theatre classes which are led by the Director of Education and the education staff.



The Education apprentice will work closely with the Director of Education to assist with programming that aligns with Playhouse’s overall mission, vision and strategic plan and assist with the weekly theatre classes. Other duties include representing The Cape Playhouse in the greater educational and arts community, creating curriculum for our classes and events and assisting with post-show discussions.



The ideal candidate will have a willingness to ensure high-quality work in the student and patron experience, excellent communication and organizational skills, and leadership capabilities.



Position is flexible with school schedules and runs from June to end of August. Weekly stipend. Housing provided on a case by case basis.

Internship Positions

Offered to individuals having just started a program of study or those that are interested in gaining more experience. All interns must secure their own housing



Company Manager Intern

The arts management intern is responsible for assisting with day to day business operations, artist travel and lodging and must be organized, work independently, and have the ability to interact successfully with a wide range of constituencies including artists, staff, travel vendors, lodging vendors, and the community in general.



The Cape Playhouse values tradition, hard work, kindness, generosity, passion, and professionalism. Candidates must be exceptionally professional and feel comfortable working with top directors, creatives and actors in American Theatre. This position is an important communication link for all departments, and therefore requires an understanding of, and adherence to, appropriate organizational protocol. The candidate must be able function in a fast-paced environment, and have the skills to identify and solve problems quickly.



Wardrobe Intern

Essential are communication and interpersonal skills, basic knowledge of sewing, ironing, altering, laundering.
