Based on an original story written by Tim Burton (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), The Nightmare Before Christmas was released in October 1993. The film follows the earnest-but-misguided adventures of Jack Skellington, the beloved Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, as he attempts to take over the Christmas holiday. Against the advice of Sally, a lonely rag doll who loves him, Jack enlists the help of three mischievous trick-or-treaters and kidnaps Santa Claus, but things don't go exactly according to plan. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and Elfman's score was nominated for a Golden Globe Award. The Nightmare Before Christmas is rated PG.

The Chicago Philharmonic has been called "one of the country's finest symphonic orchestras" by the Chicago Tribune.
