Silk Road Rising is set to present three staged readings of Danny Bernardo's new play MAHAL, directed by Greg Kolack. MAHAL opens at Pierce Hall in the Historic Chicago Temple Building on Friday, June 8th at 8pm, and continues performances on Saturday, June 9th at 8pm, and Sunday, June 10th at 2pm.

MAHAL is a new play about how one Filipino American family redefines itself after loss & reclaims their culture. One of the first plays about a Filipino American family, MAHAL centers on the Reyes family dealing with the loss of their matriarch. As new relationships blossom and family bonds are tested, a long forgotten secret from the homeland threatens to tear the family apart. Dealing with themes of cultural identity, assimilation, homophobia, interracial and inter-generational relationships, MAHAL examines what it means to be an American family, Filipino or otherwise.

The cast features Josephy Anthony Foronda, Emjoy Gavino, Karmann Bajuyo, Bryson Engelen, Kate Garassino, CameRon Johnson, Erik Kaiko , Czerina Salud, and Brittany Townsley.

Tickets may be purchased for $5 each at www.silkroadrising.org, or at the box office immediately before each reading.

Silk Road Rising was founded by life partners Jamil Khoury and Malik Gillani in 2002 under the name Silk Road Theatre Project, as a direct response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and the ensuing backlash against Middle Eastern Americans and Muslim Americans. Silk Road Rising creates live theatre and online videos that tell stories through primarily Asian American and Middle Eastern American lenses. In representing communities that intersect and overlap, we advance a polycultural worldview. To learn more about Silk Road Rising visit www.silkroadrising.org.
