HAMILTON Stars, Activists to Gather for RISE UP for ACLU of IL

By:

Members of the cast of Hamilton and other artists are hosting Rise UP, a night of music and entertainment at Moonlight Studios, on April 3, 2017 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. with proceeds going to support the work of the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois. The ACLU is the largest and oldest civil liberties organization in Illinois.

Working in close collaboration with The Number Project, a local creative agency, the ACLU of Illinois is proud to host an event featuring some of Chicago's most exciting performers, united in support of the ACLU's essential work to extend civil rights and civil liberties in our state. The concert is part of an ongoing collaboration between members of the cast of Hamilton and the ACLU of Illinois.

The concert will feature headlining artists from the cast of Hamilton, including Ari Afsar and Miguel Cervantes, as well as Adam Jacobs (Broadway's Aladdin) and Jamila Woods, a Chicago-based poet and vocalist. Rafael Casal and Samora Pinderhughes will also perform at the event.

From 3 to 4 pm, the artists and representatives from the ACLU will be available for interviews about the critical need to protect civil liberties and human rights in light of the threats coming from the Trump Administration.

"It is exciting to have these performers support the work of the ACLU on behalf of immigrants, LGBTQ people, women seeking reproductive health care, people of color hoping for fair, community-based policing and human rights generally," said Colleen K. Connell, Executive Director of the ACLU of Illinois. "Our staff will leave the singing to the professionals - but we will be back at work early the next day to protect basic rights for all."

"I am so proud to be working with the ACLU here in Chicago. We need the ACLU now more than ever, but the ACLU also needs each of us to use our voice to speak out against intolerance and division", said Ari Afsar, who plays Eliza in Hamilton and serves on the board of the ACLU of Illinois' Next Generation Society.

"At a time in our country where there is so much insecurity and uncertainty about the future, we want people to know that there are folks out there, specifically the ACLU, that want to help and will support them", said Miguel Cervantes, who plays the lead in the Chicago cast ofHamilton.
