Geek Out With Wookiee Bellydance In An Underground Theatre
Never seen a Wookiee bellydance? Well, what are you waiting for? On Friday, March 8, join firespinning superheroes, magic-wielding barbers, and a bellydancing Wookiee for an incredible night of nerdiness inspired by Star Wars, Game of Thrones, Marvel, and more at Chicago's Under the Gun Theater in Wrigleyville. It's an intimate space where every audience member is right next to the action.
Voted "Best Dance Troupe" (runner-up) by the Chicago Reader, Raks Geek is the premiere bellydance, flow arts, and fire performance company by geeks, for geeks in the world. Though based in Chicago, they've made waves from New Zealand to the UK for their commitment to blend a high degree of artistic and technical mastery with creativity and themes from geek culture.
"One of the things that Raks Geek does best is present dance and firespinning at a high technical skill level, but in a setting that's intimate and fun," says founder and director Dawn Xiana Moon. "We often leave audience members as friends. It's a great night out if you're not particularly nerdy, but this is also a show created by geeks who really love the source material. So anyone that enjoys comics, science fiction, or video games will find something extra to love."
The March 8 show will also raise money for a Chicago public school. Raks Geek will be donating a portion of show proceeds to the Computer Science Department at Lane Tech High School, which has been nationally recognized as one of the most innovative in the country.
"We believe in giving back to our community," says Moon. "And what better way to support the next generation of nerds?" Indeed. These nerds have a big heart.
