Broadway In Chicago has announced that the first annual Illinois High School Musical Theater Awards will be held in May 2012. This newly-established chapter of the National High School Musical Theater Awards will serve as an annual celebration of outstanding achievement in musical theater performance by high schools.

"We are excited to bring these national awards to Illinois," Lou Raizin, Broadway In Chicago president, said. "This is a chance to focus on the talent here in our state, as well as encourage students to follow their dreams."

Eligible students are 9 - 12 grade high school students from the state of Illinois who have performed the lead role in their full-length high school musical. Students are required to submit all entry materials by March 30, 2012, for a preliminary screening process. The top 24 submissions (12 actors and 12 actresses) will be asked to perform on Monday, May 7, 2012 at the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place (175 E. Chestnut St.). These finalists will perform for a panel of musical theater industry professionals. One young man and one young woman will be invited to attend the National High School Musical Theater Awards in New York City.

Applications for the Illinois High School Musical Theater Awards are due on Friday, March 30, 2012 at 5 p.m. Finalists will be announced on Monday, April 23, 2011.

Two Illinois Winners (one lead actor, one lead actress) will fly to New York City for an all-expense paid trip to participate in a performance enrichment program and represent the state of Illinois at the National High School Musical Theater Awards at a Broadway theatre on Monday, June 25, 2012. Activities will commence on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, with rehearsals, master classes, private coaching and interviews with theater professionals leading up to the live awards show where the JimmyTM Award for Best Performance by an Actor and Best Performance by an Actress will be presented. The program will conclude on Tuesday, June 26, 2012.
