Light Opera Works is currently taking enrollments for the 2012 Musical Theater Summer Workshop. Young people ages 8 to 15 will learn singing, dancing and acting in preparation for a public performance on Saturday, where family and friends are invited to watch them perform a mini-musical. No experience or audition required, and everyone gets a part.

Five separate one-week workshops will be offered in 2012, each based on a hit musical. Each workshop is Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm, with a final dress rehearsal on Saturday at 1:00 pm and a public performance at 4:00 pm.

This year's workshops are:

THE WIZARD OF OZ (age 8-13) June 18-23, 2012

THE KING AND I (age 8-13) June 25-30, 2012

Disney's THE LITTLE MERMAID (age 8-13)
July 9-14, 2012

THE MIKADO (age 8-13) July 16-21, 2012

GUYS AND DOLLS (age 8-13) July 23-28, 2012

New for 2012 is "Stage Struck" advanced workshop, August 1-11, 2012 -- a 10-day program for teens 12-15, who want to delve deeper into musical theater. Classes are 10:00 am to 3:00 pm (to 1:00 pm on August 4), with a final dress rehearsal on August 11 at 1:00 pm and a public performance at 4:00 pm. An audition is required for acceptance into the "Stage Struck" advanced session.

The workshop manager is Anya Plotkin. Anya was a member of the team that created the Summer Workshop in 2001. She works to create an environment where children have the unique opportunity to develop confidence in a nurturing, non-threatening and fun atmosphere. The workshop director/choreographer is Caryn Ott. Musical director is Christopher Richard.

Workshop classes are held at the new Light Opera Works rehearsal center, 516 4th Avenue in Wilmette. Saturday performances are at Light Opera Works Second Stage at McGaw YMCA Children's Center Auditorium, 1420 Maple Avenue in Evanston. The fee is $350 per student per workshop ($450 for "Stage Struck" advanced session).
