PLAY SYNOPSIS
Proud and solitary, Eel Marsh House surveys the windswept reaches of the salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway. Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor, is summoned to attend the funeral of Mrs. Alice Drablow, the house's sole inhabitant, unaware of the tragic secrets which lie hidden behind the shuttered windows. It is not until he glimpses a wasted young woman, dressed all in black, at the funeral, that a creeping sense of unease begins to take hold, a feeling deepened by the reluctance of the locals to talk of the woman in black - and her terrible purpose.
Years later, as an older man, Kipps hires a theatre and the services of a professional actor to help him re-enact-and thereby hopefully exorcise-a ghostly event which befell him many years previously with horrifyingly tragic results. The play unfolds around the conversations of these two characters as they act out the solicitor's experiences on Eel Marsh all those years ago.
CAST
Actor - a middle aged solicitor. (He is the "real" Kipps but is referred to as Actor.) Portrays various roles within his own story. Must have range; be comfortable creating and playing different characters and ability to do British accents.
Kipps - A young actor/teacher hired by Kipps to tell his story. Must be confident, agile, with a wide range, and comfortable with a British accent.
Vision/The Woman - A mysterious, ghastly young woman described as "suffering from a terrible wasting disease...extremely pale...thinnest layer of flesh tautly stretched across her bones...a look of extreme illness...searching for something she must have..." Does she really exist-or is she just a part of Kipps' nightmares?
