Don Stitt to Bring MARVELOUS! THE SONGS OF JOHNNY MERCER Set to The Ware Center, 5/17

By:

Don Stitt, a critically-acclaimed TV, stage and film actor; comic; singer and playwright, will be performing the songs of legendary American lyricist, composer and co-founder of Capitol Records, Johnny Mercer in his one-man show "Too Marvelous! The Songs of Johnny Mercer."

Stitt has been seen on TV shows, including Boardwalk Empireand Law & Order. He's appeared more than a dozen times onLate Night with David Letterman. He's been in stage productions from San Francisco to Broadway, including the recent revival of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," and has appeared in nearly a half a dozen films.

Stitt's original production "Too Marvelous" features the songs of the legendary Johnny Mercer. Mercer wrote the lyrics and occasionally the melodies to popular hits for big bands, popular singers, Broadway shows, and Hollywood musicals. He is credited as being one of the most prolific lyricists of our (or any) time, having written lyrics for more than 1,500 songs. Among his hits are One for My Baby, Accentuate the Positive, Alexander's Ragtime Band, Skylark, Autumn Leaves, Moon River, Days of Wine & Roses, to name only a few. Name a song and Mercer probably wrote its lyrics. He received nineteen Academy Award nominations, and won four.

But his talents were only a small part of this show-biz legend. He was as famous for his off-stage antics, as on. He ran with Hollywood royalty, including Bing Crosby's hard-drinking circle and had a scandalous, intense affair with nineteen-year-old Judy Garland. Stitt intertwines stories from Mercer's past into the songs he sings, reflecting Mercer's connection to his songs which helps the audience understand the man behind the music.
