Blackfriars Theatre, a not-for-profit, professional theatre on East Main Street's "Theatre Row," is proud to announce productions for its 2011-2012 season.

Blackfriars is offering Rochester audiences a wide variety of comedy, drama, and exciting musical theatre for 2011-2012. We're bringing back some old favorites, and introducing some productions that have never been seen in the Rochester area. We're starting off with a play first seen several years ago at the Rochester TheatreFest at GeVa Theatre:

"TEA AT FIVE" chronicles the life of Katherine Hepburn in a one-woman tour de force. Reprising the role that won her kudos from critic Jack Garner, Jill Rittinger portrays Hepburn through all the dizzying heights and emotional lows of her storied career. The show runs from September 10-24, 2011.

"THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP (A Penny Dreadful Comedy)" This definitive spoof of Gothic melodramas is a quick change marathon, in which two actors play all the roles. A sympathetic werewolf, a vampire, and an Egyptian princess brought to life when her tomb is opened, it led the NY Daily News to declare it as "Lunatic fun that keeps you in stitches." This production will run from October 22 - November 5, 2011

"TOM FOOLERY" Experience the sharp witty, wicked, offbeat wit of famed Harvard mathematics professor turned satirist, Tom Lehrer. He delighted audiences in the 1950's and 60's with his dry, cynical, but good - humored attacks on topics such as the A-bomb, racism, pollution, pornography, religion, and of course, mathematics. This production will run from December 3, 2011 - January 7, 2012.

Running concurrently with "Tom Foolery," but not part of our regular subscription series (and back in time for the holidays), David Jason Kyle returns for a third time in David Sedaris' hilarious, "THE SANTALAND DIARIES." Based on the story of the same name, Kyle's portrayal of the cranky elf, Crumpet, will leave you holding your stomach's from laughing. This is a short run production, from December 16-21, 2011.

"THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING" In this dramatic adaptation of her award winning, best selling memoir, Joan Didon transforms the story of the sudden and unexpected loss of her husband and their only daughter into a stunning and powerful theatrical experience. This production runs from January 20-29, 2012.

"THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED" This recent Broadway hit follows the adventures of young Hollywood heartthrob Mitchell Green, who could hit it big if not for one teensy-weensy little problem: his agent, Diane, who can't seem to keep him in the closet. This production runs from March 3-17, 2012.

"GREY GARDENS" The hilarious and heartbreaking story of Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis' aunt and
cousin - once bright names on East Hampton's social register - that became its most notorious recluses.
This production runs from April 28 - May 12, 2012.

THAT'S NOT ALL - THIS SUMMER IS ALSO BUSY AT BLACKFRIARS, WITH THE RETURN OF A CLASSIC BROADWAY MUSICAL, AND SOME QUALITY "MOM" TIME.

Calling all moms (or, mom's to be)! Blackfriars presents an original comedy that rips away the gauzy mask of parenthood, to reveal what all mothers know but don't always talk about. "The MOMologues," is exhausting, overwhelming, and very, very funny. From the joys of infertility, to reading the same books over and over, to finally seeing your baby get on that school bus, this play mines the laughs and tears of the early years of motherhood. This production runs from July 8-17, 2011.

25 years ago, Blackfriars was one of the first theatres outside of New York City to premiere Stephen Sondheim's "Sunday In The Park With George." In a radically interpreted new production, our Artistic Director, John Haldoupis revisits Sondheim's masterpiece, specifically designed for our new thrust stage. The musical chronicles the story of painter Georges Seurat's efforts as he struggles to complete his masterpiece, An Afternoon On The Island Of La Grand Jatte. This production runs from July 30 - August 13, 2011.
