June 2-27
The War of the Worlds radio broadcast, directed by Orson Welles on October 30, 1938, was a dramatization of H.G. Wells’ novel. It was presented as a series of fake news bulletins simulating a Martian invasion of Earth targeting New Jersey. The realistic sound effects and presentation style led some listeners to believe it was an actual event and caused widespread panic despite announcements that it was a fictional play. The event remains one of the most famous examples of mass hysteria triggered by a radio broadcast.
This 4-week session will introduce teens to the art of classic radio drama. Students will study the history of 1930’s radio shows. They will develop sharper listening and speaking skills through the art of voice acting, work as an ensemble, practice projection, learn how to create Foley sound effects that build a compelling narrative, hone communication skills, and enhance their critical thinking while exploring storytelling without relying on visual cues. Students will have a blast terrifying the masses again with their performance of the infamous War of the Worlds broadcast!
