FEBRUARY 5-8

LUCY KAPLANSKY
Friday, February 5 at 7:00 PM

"Bold, vibrant...vocals seem to glide to the heavens." - Boston Globe

Fusing folk-pop, rock and alt country into her own perfect blend, singer-songwriter Lucy Kaplansky gets to the heart of a song, drawing on her background as a clinical psychologist to turn a reflective eye on the many facets of being: love and longing, guilt and sorrow, promises and lies, hope and redemption. As a result of her steady touring - solo, with a band, and with folk supergroup "Cry, Cry, Cry" (with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell) - Lucy's distinctive blend of warmth, power and vulnerability and riveting performances have won her a devoted following. With a beautiful flair for harmony, Kaplansky originally came to prominence as "everyone's favorite singing partner", joining NY's fertile coffeehouse community of songwriters and performers and adding her voice to recordings by Suzanne Vega, John Gorka, Nancy Griffith, and Shawn Colvin. In 1994, she began to release a series of acclaimed albums on Red House, winning the Association For Independent Music award for best pop album of 1999, and steadily toping the Americana and Triple A radio charts. $25 in advance, $30 at door

THE MAST / HAALE

Friday, February 5 at 9:30 PM

"Haale's warm, supple voice unfurled like a curlicue of smoke. Her band amplified rumble served as a reminder of the extent to which rock bands like the Doors and the Velvet Underground turned to the East for their most hypnotic efforts; here their borrowings were reclaimed with interest." - The New York Times "Haale works a panoramic blend of luscious rock, heady bass, and brilliantly produced rhythms." - Popmatters

"The surprise chestnut at the heart of the music is the dynamic, fiery delivery of Haale herself, whose voice is by turns deep and commanding, feather-light and breezy, and as rich and sensual as dark-chocolate fondue." - Flavorpill $15

FITZ AND THE TANTRUMS

DAN TORRES WITH SPECIAL GUEST MARTIN RIVAS

Saturday, February 6 at 7:00 PM

"Dan Torres' ability to silence a room with his hauntingly beautiful melodies and heart-wrenching lyrics simply indicates how personally his songs resonate to audience members, each clearly mesmerized by his voice and hanging on the next chord." Christina Morelli, NYC Art Scene

Dan Torres is one of the hottest acts to grace the New York City music community. He is an artist with the ability to capture perfect words and human emotion, delicately tying them together for songs that move your body and soul. Known for an extreme vocal range that's been likened to the great Jeff Buckley, and scintillating rhythms, Torres has taKen Down the house at many of NYC's hip venues, scoring residencies at Rockwood Music Hall as well as playing to crowds at Bowery Ballroom, Highline Ballroom, Mercury Lounge, The Living Room and more. Joined by his band consisting of New York's finest musicians, Ryan Vaughn on drums/percussion, Patrick Firth on keys, and Brian Killeen on bass, Dan is quickly rising as a name to know in the scene. Impressing crowds with his talent comes as second nature to the brilliant singer-songwriter, but the delivery of his music paired with a touch of class and a genuine appreciation for his audience is what keeps eager fans coming back for more. $12

FRESHLYGROUND

Saturday, February 6 at 9:30 & 11:30 PM

Everywhere they go, Freshlyground are a sensation. In South Africa audiences of every race cram in to see them. Old people get up and dance. Hip black teenagers sing to their lyrics. White kids emulate their moves. The very presence of this band in South Africa is the promise of a harmonious future. But they don't sit still for the picture.

Freshlyground adds violin and flute to the familiar band instrumentation of bass, drums, keys and guitar, and sometimes throws in the mbira, a traditional African "thumb piano" and sax. So typical of African groups, their dance routines are loosely choreographed to allow space for spontaneity, which comes with live-wire energy. "Forget about your destiny, get off your feet and live!" the lead singer Zolani sings, and she knows exactly how to make an audience go wild.

Freshlyground draws crowds as they go, making surprisingly good impressions, remarkably large impacts. That's what they've done all along. Bridged historical divides, defied musical stereotypes. And it's about time an Afro-pop band took some of Africa's magical music to the world. It's about time. $20

Known for the soundtracks of Zorba the Greek, Z, and Serpico, Theodorakis recently said that, "With Lina my songs have a new beginning." $20

TRAPPER'S GREATEST HITS VOLUME 1: FROM NY TO LA AND BACK

Sunday, February 7 9:30 PM

"One of the things I find most exciting about Felides: He bridges the worlds of Broadway, pop music and downtown performance in a novel way. This is the kind of stuff cabaret needs to do if it doesn't want to die a sad death in overprice uptown restaurants." - Elisabeth Vincentelli, NY Post

It's gotta be a good thing then, that Trapper Felides is bringing a fresh and new series to Joe's Pub, pulling favorite numbers from his past shows and songs that have had impact in his career over the past 10 years. After creating the acclaimed West Coast social swirl UPRIGHT Cabaret with Shane Scheel and Chris Isaacson, Trapper came home to the east coast and has kept his hands full with the kids of Broadway. It's time for his own return to the NY concert scene, where he has been largely absent since his series at Opia. Come on February 7th to see familiar faces from Broadway, TV, film, and the music world.

Scheduled to perform:

Tracy Bonham, Elizabeth Brackenbury, Celina Carvajal, Zelma Davis, Molly Ephraim, Bridget Everett, Anne Fraser Thomas, Brian Gallagher, Matthew Gumley, Ashanta J'Aria, Eric Michael Krop, Tom Lenk, Ashley Linton, Emily McNamara, Eric Nelsen, Molly Pope, Allie Trimm and more... $20

Allison MooreR

Monday, February 8 at 7:30 PM

Making sense of things isn't always easy. Singer/songwriter Allison Moorer knows this, for sifting through life's various complexities can make for a good song and even better story. Nearly 12 years ago, Moorer made an unforgettable introduction with her contribution of the thoughtful ballad, "A Soft Place to Fall," to the soundtrack to Robert Redford-directed drama, 1998's A Horse Whisperer, which later earned her an Academy Award nomination. From there, Moorer went on to carefully craft a long-lasting career receiving a Grammy nomination in 2007 for "Days Aren't Long Enough," a song co-written with husband, singer-songwriter Steve Earle.
Her latest release, Crows (Rykodisc) is wholeheartedly real -- its spirit is tangible and each lyric could belong to anyone. Moorer's look inward is pure and without hesitation, all while she's exploring what could exist outside of one's soul. $15
