Broadway's Christine Toy Johnson Closes THREE VOICES Series at Stage 72 Today

Broadway actress, writer and filmmaker Christine Toy Johnson performs for one night only at Stage 72 (formerly the Triad) tonight, November 11, 2013 at 7:00pm as the final artist in Motown The Musical director Charles Randolph-Wright's "Three Voices" concert series, which has also featured Nita Whitaker and Dodie Pettit.

Christine's concert is directed by Bruce Johnson, with musical direction by David Dabbon. Jose Llana (Here Lies Love) and Baayork Lee (A Chorus Line) will make special guest star appearances.

Christine has been breaking the color barrier in non-traditionally cast roles for over 25 years, and has been featured extensively on Broadway, Off-Broadway, in regional theatres across the country, in film, television, and concerts worldwide. She just finished a run Off-Broadway as "Mrs. Randolph" in the Mint Theater's revival of Philip Goes Forth.

Other highlights include the New York revivals of The Music Man, Merrily We Roll Along, Pacific Overtures, and Falsettoland, the national tours of Cats,Flower Drum Song and Bombay Dreams, and leading roles at some of the most well-respected theatres across the country including the New York Shakespeare Festival, Williamstown Theatre Festival, the Huntington Theatre, Yale Rep, The Denver Center Theatre Company, The Minnesota Opera and New York City Opera. Almost 100 film and television appearances include two years as "Lisa West" on "One Life to Live," "Smash," "666 Park Avenue," "30 Rock," "Ugly Betty," "The Big C," "Fringe," "Royal Pains," "Crossing Jordan" and many episodes of various incarnations of "Law & Order."

Christine executive produced and co-directed (with husband Bruce Johnson) the award-winning documentary feature, Transcending - The Wat Misaka Story, about Japanese American basketball star Wat Misaka of the 1947 Knicks, the first non-Caucasian player in the NBA. A collection of her written works are included in the Library of Congress Asian Pacific American Performing Arts Collection, having been produced and/or developed at places including the Roundabout Theatre Company, the Barrow Group Theatre Company, The Weston Playhouse, Cap21, Leviathan Lab, Gorilla Rep, Crossroads Theatre Company, New Perspectives Theatre Company, Queens Theatre in the Park and Diverse City Theatre Company.

Christine has been a member of the elected leadership of Actors' Equity Association since 1992, serving as co-chair of the union's Equal Employment Opportunity Committee and also on the executive board of the Tony-honored Alliance for Inclusion in the Arts. She is a founding member of AAPAC (Asian American Performers Action Coalition), founder of the Asian American Composers and Lyricists Project, was a semi-finalist for the Ford Foundation "Leadership for a Changing World" Award in 2001, and has received multiple grant awards in support of her work from The California Civil Liberties Public Education Program, Asian Women Giving Circle, The Open Meadows Foundation, The Manhattan Community Arts Fund, The Puffin Foundation, The Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance and The Boomerang Fund for Artists. She was honored by the JACL (the nation's largest and oldest Asian American civil rights organization) in 2010 for "exemplary leadership and dedication", received the "Wai Look Award for Outstanding Service in the Arts" from the Asian American Arts Alliance in 2012, and the Rosetta LeNoire Award for "outstanding artistic contributions to the universality of the human spirit" from Actors' Equity Association in 2013. Christine is a member of the BMI Musical Theatre Writing Workshop, and is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College and the Certificate of Screenwriting Program at NYU.
