Birdland Theater Presents Lorna Dallas In STAGES On February 11th
Birdland Jazz Club will present vocalist Lorna Dallas for one night only in Stages, an all new show at The Birdland Theater (315 West 44th Street) on Monday, February 11, 2019 @ 8:30 pm.
Last season, American-born, West End performer, Lorna Dallas, returned to the New York cabaret world after a twenty-year hiatus to acclaim throughout the community. This season, Dallas returns again, to the Birdland Theater, with Stages, devised by her two long-time collaborators, musical director Christopher Denny and director Barry Kleinbort. Stages refers to those theaters and nightclubs where Dallas displayed her singing talents, as well as to the formative stages in a life-stages that have taken her from a small town in Southern Illinois to New Orleans and on to the West End with Sammy Cahn and Dame Cleo Laine, culminating in Royal Command performances for Queen Elizabeth and the Royal family. The musical program is equally diverse, ranging from standards and show tunes by Broadway's greats to little known but equally worthy gems from both sides of the "pond."
Lorna Dallas went from winning a national talent contest in high school (the finals in Town Hall in New York) to Indiana University to the Metropolitan Opera National Company to London to star as Magnolia in the record-breaking revival of Show Boat with Dame Cleo Laine. She remained in the UK to star in major musicals, as well as on television, including the BBC series, "Lorna Dallas...My Musical World" and "Serenade." She has also been a guest artist major concert halls worldwide as well as on cabaret stages in the US and UK. She is firm favorite of the Royal Family and has appeared by special request at many Charity Galas and concerts in their presence.
Christopher Denny is a multi-Bistro and MAC Award winner who has served as musical director, arranger and pianist for such theater, cabaret and opera luminaries as Karen Mason, Julie Wilson, Brent Barrett, Gregg Edelman, David Campbell, Tammy Grimes, Rod Gilfry, David Burnham, Ron Raines, Andrea Marcovicci, Lauren Bacall, Dorothy Loudon, Kaye Ballard, Jeff Harnar and Steven Brinberg. His forty-year career has taken him to virtually all of the major venues in New York and throughout the U.S. As a vocal coach, he has worked with many promising newcomers and well-established stars, including Boyd Gaines, John Cameron Mitchell, Ethan Hawke, Anthony Rapp, T.R. Knight, Gavin MacLeod, Austin Pendleton and many others. He has recorded about thirty CDs.
Barry Kleinbort earned the Edward Kleban Foundation Award for Lyric Writing, two Gilman-Gonzalez Musical Theatre Awards, the Second Stage Musicals Writers Award, the Jamie deRoy/ ASCAP award, two Back Stage Bistro awards and eleven Manhattan Association of Cabarets (MAC) awards for his directorial and songwriting efforts. He is currently working on a musical adaptation of Michael White's popular memoir, "Travels in Vermeer."
