Following this season's fall-off in the ratings, Fox's THE X-FACTOR is in for an overhaul - but it will definitely be back.

"The show will be back next season," Simon Cowell said today, according to Deadline.

"As to my role on it. I might have a different kind of role," he confirmed, though is "not necessarily saying" that he'll be giving up his judging position on the U.S. version to rejoin the UK's. Cowell went on to say that The X Factor has "got to be more different next year than it was this year" and reiterates that he and 'FACTOR' execs are in "the middle of a presentation what we think the show should look like and what the fans would like, and yes, my role could change."

With the diminishing viewers and rising production costs, Cowell also confirmed that Fox is considering downsizing next year's season. There's speculation that THE X FACTOR might follow DANCING WITH THE STARS' lead, and broadcast a single episode each week, rather than the now-standard separate performance and elimination nights.

In another potential format change, Cowell knows that there's now an even greater need to differentiate 'FACTOR' from its competition.

"They all all have a choice now what they can audition for - us, AMERICA'S GOT TALENT, IDOL, THE VOICE - we somehow have to convince them 'THE X FACTOR is the best one for you'," he said.

The X Factor was created by Syco Entertainment and is produced by Syco Entertainment and FremantleMedia North America. Executive producers are Andrew Llinares, Rob Wade, Trish Kinane, Richard Holloway and Nigel Hall.
